Talk about one for the record books Lost fans! I know I'm a day late on the post and I didn't make a video like I promised you (no audio either) but "The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham" was the kind of episode that not only boggles your mind but also pushes our rule book to the breaking point!
Check out the important point rulings section below because it's full of vital information that will help you understand where some of the more confusing scores are coming from. There were difficult rulings and there were point adjustments that affect the scores for last week's episode, "316." Please check it out. It will probably save you some time you might otherwise have spent emailing a question to me. It's all right there.
John Locke was a tour de force of points this week! He hit 18 point categories all on his own, setting more than one LFL record in the process. Given that the average episode is 42 minutes long and Locke hit several of our categories multiple times, Jungle John pulls of the amazing feat of hitting a point category nearly every minute of airtime!
Some of you are undoubtedly sulking because you realize that, by not picking John, you've just missed out on the single largest points grab by one character in the short history of the LFL. Those of us who picked Locke will happy dance 'til dawn because John Locke's feared death episode turns out to be a veritable cash cow! Too bad Lapidus wasn't around to see this bovine bonanza. :-p
As I said, be sure to check out all the content below. If you skip over it, you may be confused about more than a few things. Making points adjustments and corrections can do some funny things to our database. If, for some reason your previous ranking or overall score doesn't look quite right, it's because the adjustments caused a few hiccups with how that data is presented.
If you've got any questions, consult the League rule book at the bottom of this post. If you can't find an answer to your questions there, shoot me an email at LFLquestions@gmail.com. I will do my best to get back to you as promptly as possible.
"The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham" in 500 words or less:
So Locke died but he’s alive again? Um… okay?
After fixing the FDW and saying goodbye to Ghost Dad, the Island upchucks him into the Sahara desert and Locke upchucks his guts. Lovely. Apparently he’s at the same spot Ben turned up at, only this time there’s a camera watching. Widmore’s dudes must be slow on the uptake because Locke isn’t picked up until nighttime.
Locke’s leg is set crudely but Widmore makes sure he’s well taken care of. He gives him a new name, passport, and fills him in on what has happen in the past three years since Locke skipped them over faster than Fonzie jumped the shark in that episode of Happy Days. Plus his driver is the über-creepy Matthew Abaddon. What’s not to like?
Locke sets out to bring the Oceanic 6 back together and return them all to the Island. In Santo Domingo, he finds that Sayid has traded in his gun for a hammer and is building schools and houses instead of busting skulls.
In New York, Locke meets with Walt but takes pity on the boy. Believing that Walt’s been through enough, Locke decides just to say hi and not bring him back.
When visiting Santa Rosa, Hurley initially thinks Locke is just another vision but flips out when he finds out Locke is real. He flips out double when he sees Locke paling around with Abaddon and tells Locke no.
Kate’s all holier-than-thou and talks to Locke like he’s 5. She rejects the chance to go back and tells Locke to give up on his obsession.
Locke has Abaddon track down his old girlfriend Helen only to find that she’s been dead for a while. Talk about deflating. Then Abaddon gets blown away and Locke scramble for his life before causing a three-car pileup in West LA.
Locke wakes up in the hospital. But it’s not just any hospital; it’s Jack’s hospital. Locke meets post-break-up Jack (aka Dr. Douchebag). Jack half-drunkenly argues with Locke over going back and leaves the room.
In other words- Locke sucks at recruiting people.
Realizing that he pretty much sucks at life, Locke decides to give death a try. Before he can hang himself with an extension cord noose though, Ben breaks down the door and talks John out of it. After name-dropping Ms. Hawking, Ben gets that cold “oh really?” look and kills John himself, making it look like a suicide.
Fast forward to the crash of Ajira Flight 316. Locke wakes up (so to speak) and they find him hanging out on the beach. Nobody recognizes him from the flight and he adds to the confusion by being straightforward and saying he doesn’t remember being on it either but that he does remember dying. Way to not draw suspicion Locke.
Caesar takes Locke through to look at the injured and recognizes Ben as the person who killed him. Cue the dun-dun-DUN moment; end of episode.
POINT RULINGS FOR EPISODE 5x07: “The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham”
THE OCEANIC 6:
1) None of the Oceanic 6 receives points for encountering the Numbers. The only time any of the Oceanic 6 appear on screen with the Numbers is on the newspaper Charles Widmore hands Locke.
For Sun and Aaron, it is a simple disqualification based on our Appearance/Attendance rules. A character appearing solely in a picture can only earn points for attendance and nothing else.
For Jack, Kate, Hurley and Sayid, it is more complicated. The rule book states that “only characters appearing in person on screen will qualify for other “Appearance” point categories. As we have the right to modify the rules in any way during the course of the season, we have elected to extend this limitation to all point categories beyond the 5 points for appearing in the episode.
Jack, Kate, Hurley and Sayid appear in a photograph with the Numbers printed on the page but they are not present in person during this scene in order to actually encounter those Numbers. The fact that they show up in person later in the episode does not qualify them for encountering the Numbers in photograph form.
BEN:
1) Ben is charged with receiving a major injury. At the end of the episode, Ben was being housed with the other injured people from Ajira Flight 316. We are assuming that this is because he incurred additional injuries to the ones he had already sustained prior to boarding Flight 316. If, during the course of the next few episodes, it is determined that Ben did not incur any additional injuries, this injury deduction will be removed and Ben’s score adjusted accordingly.
2) Ben is charged for the murder of Matthew Abaddon and John Locke. Ben acknowledged to Locke that he was the one who killed Abaddon. That was enough for us to slap the murder/kill deduction on him. Also, despite Locke’s on-Island resurrection, he was in fact dead for a prolonged period of time. Thus, we are still considering him to have died. Since he died at the hands of Ben Linus, Ben loses more points.
ABADDON:
1) Abaddon is dead. Ben made clear to Locke that he was responsible for Abaddon’s death. We are taking this at face value and considering Abaddon to be dead indeed.
2) Abaddon is credited with traveling by car seven times during the episode. The rule book states that League Characters earn points if they are “seen travelling in a car or other automobile” during the episode. While Abaddon and Locke were not physically seen inside a moving car each time these points were awarded, common sense prevailed in awarding points to them based on the amount of travel apparent in the episode.
Even though Abaddon was not present in every scene with Locke and/or the car, his establishment as Locke’s driver qualifies him for points in the following scenes:
•When he drives up to the Tunisian hospital
•While driving Locke to the Tunisian airport
•Visiting Sayid in the Dominican Republic (the car was present)
•Visiting Walt in New York City
•Visiting Hurley at Santa Rosa
•Visiting Kate in LA
•Visiting Helen’s grave site
LOCKE:
1) Locke gets New Person, Place or Thing points 8 times for the episode. They are as follows:
•New People- The Ajira Flight 316 survivors (including Ilana)
•New Person- Caesar (he was away from the group when Locke was found)
•New Things- The boats on Hydra Island
•New Thing- The Wheel chamber (re-used scene from his first encounter with it, which, according to our rules, qualifies for points again)
•New Place- The Exit Point
•New People- The men who pick him up off the road
•New Place- The Tunisian hospital
•New Place- Jack’s hospital
2) Locke encounters a polar bear. The rules state that the readily identifiable remains of a polar bear will count for points. An animal skull is sitting on the desk in the Hydra building. After doing a little research, it has been confirmed to be a polar bear skull.
3) Locke receives two major injuries during the episode. The first is for when he wakes up after space-time travel. He was knocked unconscious by it and vomits in the road. This is enough to merit a major injury. The second is when he is involved in the multi-car accident in LA. Locke is bloodied by it, qualifying him for a major injury deduction.
4) Locke is NOT charged with injuring anybody in the multi-car accident. While there may have been injuries, none of the other drivers and passengers was seen. Also, Jack did not inform Locke that anyone else involved in the accident was hurt.
5) Locke dies. Though the rules appear to hold a loophole by stating that “to receive the Death Deduction, the League Character must remain dead,” the rules were meant to prevent death deductions in cases of near-death experiences. In Season 1, Charlie technically dies after being hung by Ethan but Jack manages to resuscitate him shortly after the hanging occurred.
Locke was physically dead for a matter of days before being resurrected by the Island. Because of his prolonged but temporary death, Locke does lose points for dying in this episode.
6) The Exit Point counts as a Virgin Discovery for Locke. Ben simply stated that those who turned the wheel were exiled but Locke had no idea that turning the wheel actually transported you off the Island. As a consequence of turning the Wheel, Locke was shot to the Exit Point, which he had never been to or heard of before.
7) Locke’s flashback counts as a Miscellaneous FB. It starts on the Island and then proceeds off-Island. This mix causes it to be a Miscellaneous FB.
8) Locke earns points for travelling by car 8 times during the episode. The same principle applies here as it did with Abaddon. Locke is credited with travelling by car for the following scenes:
•Getting picked up by the men in the desert
•Abaddon driving him to the airport
•Visiting Sayid in the Dominican Republic
•Visiting Walt in New York City
•Visiting Hurley at Santa Rosa
•Visiting Kate in LA
•Visiting Helen’s grave site
•Driving off after Abaddon was killed
IMPORTANT POINT ADJUSTMENTS FOR 5x06 “316”
1) Hurley, Kate and Ben get points for encountering Caesar and Ilana at the same time. Since they were on the plane and encountered both new characters as fellow passengers, Caesar and Ilana are lumped together into one single shot of New Person points.
2) Jack gets credit for encountering Caesar and Ilana separately. He encountered Caesar at the terminal counter and later encountered Ilana as she escorted Sayid aboard near the metal detectors.
3) Sun gets credit for encountering Caesar and Ilana separately. She encounters Ilana with Jack when they see her escorting Sayid by the metal detectors. She then encounters Caesar aboard the plane.
4) Sayid only gets points for encountering Caesar. He encounters Caesar on board Flight 316 but he does not get New Person points for Ilana. We saw her escorting him to the plane. Sayid had met her before that juncture in time. We don’t know when exactly, but Sayid didn’t magically get handed to her right then and there out of thin air. If we ever see the moment when they first encounter each other this season, then Sayid will be given credit for it.
5) Also, last week’s scoring slip-up for Sayid has been corrected. He is now credited with being present.

WARNING: This section contains the title of the next episode and some conjecture on what it might mean. If you consider this sort of information to be spoilerish, then do not continue. If not...
The next episode is called "LaFleur." Being a big time hockey fan and an equally big Montreal Canadiens fan, the only thing I think of when I hear "LaFleur" is this guy on the left. Guy Lafleur was one of the greatest hockey players ever to grace the ice.
So does this mean that Guy Lafleur or the Montreal Canadiens are somehow connected to Lost? As cool as that would be, I'm not getting my hopes up. For starters, the spelling is slightly different (notice the upper vs. lowercase "f"). Secondly, what exactly would a hockey player have to do on a tropical island? He would be out of his element! Seeing a polar bear would just be evil and messing with his head.
So sadly, "LaFleur" is not likely to include anything as cool as the Montreal Canadiens or anyone from their roster (past or present) but Lost is still pretty cool in and of itself. With all the action being split up over the last few episodes, I'm hoping for some kind of tie-in that will bring everybody and all the plot lines back together.
"LaFleur" is French, meaning "the flower," so perhaps this has something to do with the Orchid station? Or perhaps it'll have something to do with Rousseau again. Either one would be cool, but the truth is that this is another episode for which I have no clue what the title could mean nor do I have any clue what to expect. It's Lost, after all, so I'll just sit back and enjoy the ride.
Come back and see what "LaFleur" does for your LaFantasy Team. :-p
Once again, here is the official LFL rule book. Happy reading!
