Four days left! Can you taste it yet? Sure you can.
So enough with all those dead people. Let's move on to some folks who are more likely to actually show up and get you some points! Today we're covering the Alive On-Island Group #2. You know, those supporting roles that a number of us like for one reason or another.
REMINDER: Do not post spoilers in the comments section. I have gone 90% spoiler-free during the hiatus and will not reveal anything that I know, so please do not let anything that you know slip. Let’s respect the fans that have gone 100% spoiler-free.
Alive On-Island Group #2
Some of the characters in this group are a bit controversial. We listed Jacob as someone who is alive when we really don’t know squat about him. We listed the Smoke Monster as alive and we don’t even know what it is. Also, for the first time we have included an animal among the characters you could select for your Fantasy Team.
All of these characters serve a supporting role on Lost and all of them were on the Island when it disappeared. While they may not earn you too terribly many points week in and out, we feel that these fine folk are or have the potential to be the ones who will show up on a consistent enough basis to earn positive points. Besides, how can you not like a group with Vincent in it?
1) Jacob
Number of Selections: 1,330 (27.37%)
G-Man Says: Bad Pick
Frankly, I’m amazed at how many of you made this selection. Nothing personal, but what were you thinking?!? Jacob has only shown up twice in the two seasons we’ve even known about him. Even then, he’s had about a half-second of screen time. I don’t know about you, but these factors just don’t add up to much potential.
Jacob does not get points for encountering himself. Also, Christian Shephard does NOT count as Jacob- let’s settle that dispute right now. That being said, Jacob has some very limited points potential. I get the feeling that Jacob is something that the powers that be are saving for Season 6, so a vast number of you just shot yourselves in the foot.
He may show up three or four times, but he doesn’t seem to like appearing for long and to most people. I’d say Jacob might pick up a few attendance points and possibly a FB bonus if he shows up in a FB for Ben or someone with a history on the Island. Ultimately though, I think Jacob will be a huge disappointment for you guys just like he was last year.
2) Rose Nadler
Number of Selections: 1,242 (25.56%)
G-Man Says: Good Pick
Rose has been around since Season 1. Her cancer was taken away by the Island, so I think that she is probably safe from dying any time soon. She shows up often enough and has engaged most of our main characters in conversation. I think with the smaller band of Losties still on the Island, we’re apt to see Rose a lot more often this season, though still in a supporting function. I can’t quite see her wandering around on an A-Team mission.
Rose is a great choice because she’s consistent. She’ll pick up appearance points all over the place. Plus, with all the DHARMA goodies lying around the beach camp, Rose is sure to score some DHARMA Logo points. While I don’t see her going on adventures, I‘ll bet the remaining Losties stick together more and move around as a group if need be. So, if the Losties roam the Island, Rose could score some visit points depending on where they go.
Rose is even a decent candidate for some Kissing Points. She and her husband are both still alive and I’ll bet they kiss each other at least once during Season 5. Even though I didn’t pick her, I think Rose is probably the best character to have on your Fantasy Team from this group. Smart thinking!
3) Bernard Nadler
Number of Selections: 774 (15.93%)
G-Man Says: Good Pick
I like Bernard for many of the same reasons that I like Rose. Obviously, Bernard doesn’t have cancer, so I think there may be a chance that he could die. It would certainly cause drama for Rose but I hope he makes it through alright.
Bernard actually outscored Rose in the Season 4 LFL -5 to -25. He still ended up costing people points overall, but he outperformed his wife, which was a surprise to me. Will it happen again? I don’t know. I have a feeling that Rose and Bernard will be all but attached at the hip this season, so he will probably fair about the same as Rose. His appearance consistency makes Bernard the second best choice in this category.
4) Smoke Monster
Number of Selections: 607 (12.49%)
G-Man Says: Bad Pick
This is another popular character that baffled me. I just didn’t think that many people would pick the Smoke Monster for some very obvious reasons. Firstly, it doesn’t show up all that often (strike one). Secondly, Somkey can’t earn points for encountering itself (strike two). Finally, Smokey has a nasty habit of beating the tar out of people (strike three). Godspeed to those of you who wanted a camera shy character with a penchant for violence. Perhaps it was the mystique about Smokey that lured you in, but I think it’s safe to say that after Season 5 you won’t be making the same mistake again.
5) Vincent
Number of Selections: 572 (11.77%)
G-Man Says: Medium Pick
The good thing about Vincent is that he pops up in some of the most interesting places. He also has survived longer than many human characters on the show and I just don’t see them killing off such an adorable pooch. The only trouble with Vincent is that he’s not as consistent of late as he was in Seasons 1 and 2. Maybe with the reduced number of Losties in the camp Vincent will have a more visible presence. I certainly hope so, seeing as I picked him for my Fantasy Team.
If the group travels anywhere, Vincent will probably go with them and he’ll pick up discovery points and visit points right along with the human folk. I think the biggest hamper to Vincent’s points potential is that he won’t likely be up for any Sex Points or First Line Points, seeing as there are no other dos around and Vincent can’t talk. Then again, you never know what might happen on that Island.
6) Cindy
Number of Selections: 182 (3.74%)
G-Man Says: Medium Pick
As long as we actually get to see the Temple this year, Cindy has a sporting chance. She went away with Richard to the Temple at the end of Season 3 and has not been seen or heard from since. Her points potential, therefore, are directly tied to whether or not we see the Temple and the rest of the Others.
Cindy was taking care of the kids, Zack and Emma (see below), so I doubt that too much bad stuff could happen to her. Besides, she’s got all those Others around her for protection. The powers that be said that we’ll see her again so I am willing to trust them this time. I’m just not sold on how involved or important she will turn out to be, hence he medium rating.
7) Harper Stanhope
Number of Selections: 96 (3.74%)
G-Man Says: Bad Pick
During Season 4, the producers said that we might just see Harper again in the future. While it might happen, I just don’t think that any appearance by Harper will amount to many points. Yes, she was married to Goodwin at one point before he died, but they didn’t seem to have the best relationship (as evidenced by his affair with Juliet) and we hardly saw them together at all.
Should Harper show up, I would expect it to be in a supporting manner. Unless she’s got one heck of a story to tell, I just don’t see her coming into prominence. She may be useful for some expository purpose, but I doubt she’ll become a recurring character. Many of you wisely avoided selecting her, but that could also have been because she was very unpopular. With several better choices to go with in this group, her percentage of picks probably mirrors my thoughts on how likely she is to turn up more than once, if at all.
8) Emma
Number of Selections: 43 (0.88%)
G-Man Says: Bad Pick
AND
9) Zack
Number of Selections: 14 (0.29%)
G-Man Says: Bad Pick
Emma and Zack are the two children from the tail section of Flight 815 who were abducted by the Others shortly after crashing on the Island. We last saw them in “Stranger in a Strange Land” with Cindy at the Hydra station. Their appearance was fleeting and of little importance. I think the same will likely happen in Season 5.
While I think we may see the Temple, where Alpert had led all of the Others in the Season 3 finale, I can’t imagine a whole lot of time will be spent on the kids. Why the Others are so interested in abducting small children is still a big mystery on the show, but it seems far less important than other mythological head-scratchers that we’ve been wondering about for a long time. We may see them in prominence once and then maybe a few other times in the background, but I think Zack and Emma don’t have much potential. I suspect that’s why nearly none of you picked them.
