Alright Lost fans, yesterday we reviewed the Alive Off Island Group #3 characters. Today we're tackling another group that's not likely to be too valuable to your Fantasy Team, but might be curcial in determining your final placement. As you know, the difference between showing up and not showing up even once all season can mean five points for you or five points taken from you. These five points could push you to LFL glory or they could leave as an also-ran.
Let's talk about dead people! They're everywhere- on the Island, off the Island in your dreams and in your face! We had so many dead characters to choose from that we needed to break them up into two different groups!
REMINDER: Do not post spoilers in the comments section. I have gone 90% spoiler-free during the hiatus and will not reveal anything that I know, so please do not let anything that you know slip. Let’s respect the fans that have gone 100% spoiler-free.
The “I See Dead People” Group #2 selections were the most evenly spread of all the character groups this year. No one character seems to have attracted a convincing majority or plurality of Fantasy Roster picks. I can understand this very easily though. It’s hard to be sure which dead Lostie is going to make an appearance either in a FB or as a vision from beyond the grave.
As with yesterdays group, I think these dearly departed are more likely to lose you points when all is said and done. There hasn’t been a consistent use of dead characters week in and week out up to now to suggest otherwise. Interestingly enough, I think this is the only group in which I have listed just one character as an all-around good pick. You may disagree, but keep in mind that this is only speculation based on where we left off at the end of Season 4.
1) Horace Goodspeed
Number of Selections: 1,066 (21.93%)
G-Man Says: Good Pick
Despite being dead, Horace has shown himself to be a big part in Ben’s past as well as in the history of the DHARMA Initiative. It certainly seems like there is a significant piece of back story left for Ben. I don’t think we’ve seen the last of his days with DHARMA and there’s bound to be more details in how he came to plan the Purge with the Hostiles. Given Horace’s seemingly important role within DHARMA, I almost expect to see him again if such events are covered.
If he shows up in some kind of FB, then he’ll scoop up the standard appearance points for that but he’ll also be a prime candidate for cleaning up on DHARMA Logo points as well. Who knows, maybe he can pick up Numbers points with his role as a mathematician too.
Horace’s appearance in an Island vision for Locke makes it seem like he might appear in a similar manner again some time this season. This is also a valuable arena for him to pick up a lot of points in a short amount of time. He wears a DHARMA jumpsuit, so he’s at least guaranteed to get points for that. The only hang up for Horace is the fact that he died in the Purge. If we see that again, he’ll be taking a 30-point hit for croaking. All in all though, Horace seems like your best bet from this group because his points potential seems to be pretty large.
2) Mr. Eko
Number of Selections: 962 (19.79%)
G-Man Says: Medium/Bad Pick
Roughly 1/5 of you all went with Eko in this group. My question is why? Was it because he was such a beloved character during his time on the show and you hope they bring him back somehow? Or was it because of the tease during the Season 4 finale with Hurley allegedly playing chess with him? Either way, I’m not convinced Eko will come back. With Hurley seeing dead people occasionally, it’s still within the realm of possibility.
The powers that be have hoped to bring the AAA back for a guest appearance, but the actor has either been too busy or reluctant to do so. Given this information, Eko is a very risky pick for your Fantasy Team. I wish all of you who picked him well, but I didn’t trust the beloved Jesus-stick swinging priest enough to put him on my team.
If Eko does return, there’s not a whole lot of potential for him. He could pick up points for appearing as an Island Vision, but how many times is he going to do that all season long? His past is separate from most of the other characters, so it’s unlikely that he’d pop up in a FB crossover. He’s dead, which means no FF potential either. I can’t help but think that Eko was wishful thinking on your part.
3) Tom (aka Mr. Friendly)
Number of Selections: 930 (19.14%)
G-Man Says: Good/Medium Pick
Despite dying in Season 3, Tom showed up and even got a little romance action in a Season 4 FB for Michael. Considering this and his status as a regularly recurring minor character, I think you’re more likely to see Tom than you are Eko.
Tom’s place as one of Ben’s trusted minions makes it all the more likely that we’ll see him again if there is any kind of focus on Ben’s history with DHARMA and the Hostiles. It’ll depend on how connected Tom is to Ben’s history. If Tom was a member of DHARMA, then there’s a good chance we’ll see him if there is any DHARMA back story revealed via FB. The same goes if he was affiliated with the Hostiles.
Aside from these arenas, there isn’t a whole lot left for Tom. He is dead, so he won’t come into play during the present or future. To score big with Tom, you need another glimpse or two into the past. He could pick up on DHARMA points if he’s connected with them, but he could also lose points if he’s one of the Hostiles and gets violent. It’s hard to say, but I think Tom’s chances and potential are better than average.
4) Nadia (Jazeem) Jarrah
Number of Selections: 887 (18.25%)
G-Man Says: Medium/Bad Pick
Nadia is a double-edged sword. If we see more of her (it would have to be from the time between the Oceanic 6’s return and when Ben hires Sayid to do his dirty work) she could pick up some romance points, as she become romantically involved with Sayid. Perhaps we’ll see their wedding? I don’t know if that will be important enough to the story though. I get a sense that the powers that be are putting the pedal to the metal and pulling no punches for the next two seasons.
The downside to Nadia is that we know she dies. If we see happy Sayid and Nadia, there is also a chance that we’ll see her death. Nadia got docked for dying last year, which put a damper on the points she got for being reunited with Sayid. Nadia’s death could very well cause her to break even on all the romance points she might earn.
The other problem is that this could all happen in one episode and you’ll be left losing 5 more points every week she doesn’t show. That’s why I don’t see her as a very viable option.
5) Mikhail Bakunin
Number of Selections: 434 (8.93%)
G-Man Says: Medium Pick
Patchy seemed to be indestructible during Season 3, but he was a no show in Season 4. This causes me some reservation in recommending him for your Fantasy Team. Mikhail really is a gut-check kind of call. He has some potential for positive points, but the pendulum could wing the other way.
There is a chance that we could see Mikhail as a part of some kind of back story on the conflict between the DHARMA Initiative and the Hostiles. If he was originally in the DHARMA camp (which he seemed to dismiss in Season 3) he could score big on Logo points, appearance points and visit points.
The flip side is that Mikhail isn’t afraid to get physical. He’s trained for hand-to-hand combat and uses it well. This could be detrimental to your Fantasy Team, especially if he only shows up once and does a lot of damage. If he is a part of the Hostiles, he could also lose points for killing DHARMA members if such events are seen. It’s a tough call and it could work either way for you.
6) Boone Carlyle
Number of Selections: 401 (8.25%)
G-Man Says: Medium/Bad Pick
Boone has appeared to Locke once in a vision before, so I can’t rule out the possibility that it might happen again. If this happens, Boone could pick up some big points. The trouble is that, unless Boone comes back as Locke’s constant guide, he’ll likely be a one-and-done kind of appearance. This greatly limits his potential.
Frankly, Boone isn’t important to the story anymore. He was mentioned in the Oceanic 6 lie but that’s about all he’s good for anymore- a clever little name drop for the fans. I doubt there is any reason for him to show up in a FB and there’s probably little from his time on the Island to revisit. Basically, Boone is done. I’m surprised that so many people picked him. Unless he’s Island Vision Boy this year, count Boone out.
7) Shannon Rutherford
Number of Selections: 95 (1.95%)
G-Man Says: Bad Pick
Probably the worst character you could select from this group, Shannon has nothing to contribute to the show anymore. Not many people even liked her to begin with. She has had little to no lasting impact on any of her fellow castaways and she hasn’t been important to the story since the middle of Season 2. I would be flat out shocked to see her involved in an Island Vision. I think the actress Maggie Grace is also probably too busy working on her movie career right now to fit in a guest stint on a show she barely made an impact on.
8) Bea Klugh
Number of Selections: 51 (1.05%)
G-Man Says: Medium Pick
I may be going out on a limb here, but I like the chances of Bea showing up again. She seems to have had some kind of authority role among the Others and was involved with taking care of Walt. She could be a huge game maker if she plays an important role in one or more episodes, but then again, she might not show up at all.
I think it will all depend on how important Walt is anymore. There is still a lot of mystery surrounding Walt and his powers. If that is going to be addressed this season (if ever) then I think Bea might play a big part of his back story. We still have seen very little of Walt’s time in captivity with the Others and I think Bea factors heavily into that.
She may also be connected to the history of DHARMA if not the Others. If we see some more background story on either of them, I think we stand a chance of seeing Bea again. This is probably an even gutsier pick than Mikhail, but I’m willing to go out on a limb and say she’s got a better than average shot at showing up, depending on the right circumstances.
9) Dr. Leslie Arzt
Number of Selections: 34 (0.70%)
G-Man Says: Bad Pick
Arzt is kind of like Shannon but cooler. Arzt never played a huge part on the show, but had a few moments during big set pieces like the Black Rock and the medusa spiders. With all the better options in this group, I am not surprised to see Arzt getting very little love. Arzt doesn’t strike me as important enough to merit a FB crossover and his on-Island exploits seem all dried up. There may yet be some kind of gimmicky appearance in store for the Doc, don’t expect much out of it in the way of points.
And just in case you missed it yesterday, here is the rule book once more:
