Nikki Stafford, Jo Garfein, Pearson Moore, and some of the most recognised names in the LOST community of bloggers and academic experts have put together an anthology unlike any other. LOST Thought contains nineteen essays and formal papers by leading thinkers. It promises to become the most widely consulted book on the groundbreaking television series.

We are Lost.

To those who remain entranced by the Island’s power, this statement conveys a sobering note of authenticity that rings through our daily reality. While a television program may have struck the original chord, the majestic score of our lives—this sequence of fighting and corruption, destiny and redemption, life, death and rebirth—continues, but in ways we never could have imagined before a fuselage with attached wing fell ten thousand meters from the sky on September 22, 2004.

The truth of the statement, however, does not originate with the television series that crashed into our living rooms on an early autumn evening several years ago. The statement was as true before Flight 815 as after; the power of Lost is found not in detached adventure or in vicarious epic, but in unreserved engagement. We are LOST, because without us the Island has no meaning. We are Lost, because the jungle trails and the shoreline beaches are the paths of our lives. We are lost, because the journey toward discovery of Self, Other, and Society never ends.

LOST has enduring relevance because we believe our lives to contain not only meaning and structure, but a uniqueness of our own making. When, inevitably, circumstance forces us to surrender, we do not go gentle into that good destiny. With Sawyer, we rage, rage against Jacob: “What made you think you could mess with my life? I was doin' just fine ‘til you dragged my ass to this damn rock.”

We recognize Sawyer’s protests as feeble counterpoint to Jacob’s grand symphony. We know, too, that our own existence is no happier than Sawyer’s, or Kate’s, or Jack’s. Jacob did not address Sawyer, but every one of us, uncomfortable on the edge of our sofas and easy chairs: “You are all flawed. I chose you because you are like me. You are all alone. You are all looking for something you couldn't find out there. I chose you because you need this place as much as it needs you.”

We feel the emotion of Sawyer’s words, but our heart is not the only aspect of our being touched by his resolve to burn and rage at close of day. Our gut tells us much more than simple feelings are at issue. In fact, if we bring the full weight of thought to bear on the proceedings at this final meeting of Candidates, we realize that something even more profound than the instinct to survive is under discussion.

Sawyer’s curses and fierce tears are appropriate, eloquent, and central to this great symphony in six movements. We cannot shrink from our Island-imposed duty to enumerate the most fundamental questions of human existence:

Do our flaws render us prisoners to fate, or do our imperfections catalyze growth and change?

To what extent does an individual human being control her own destiny?

Does life have meaning and value only to the extent that we endow significance, or does existence carry moment and solemnity independent of deeds and beliefs?

What is the nature of our identity as human beings?

What does it mean to “live together, die alone”?

How do histories and mothers and fathers affect our lives?

And the biggest question of all: What does LOST mean?

Common wisdom tells us that to rage, rage against the dying of the light is noble, but futile. What does LOST say on the matter? Is Sawyer’s refusal to acquiesce to destiny merely a caricature of dignified but pointless human pride, or do his words hint at a deeper meaning attached to the dancing flames of Jacob’s fire? Did Jack’s death exemplify final human destiny, or do life, death, and rebirth in LOST carry significance at odds with common wisdom?

LOST is many things to many people, but it will never be designated as common. We may consider it an adventure story, but if so, it is grand adventure, and unlike any epic ever portrayed on the small screen. We may consider it above all a story about interesting characters, but nothing as mundane as a character study has within itself capacities to drive tens of millions to sustained sorrow, unrestrained joy, and warm tears. We may believe LOST is first of all an intricate tale of powers and forces physical and supernatural, but the Cork Stone controls more than electromagnetic waves and travel forward and back through place and time.

It is precisely because we are Lost—because we are susceptible to Jacob’s Progress—that LOST endures. Most of the contributors to this anthology refer to LOST as an open, living text. The book of LOST cannot be closed because a definitive judgment of its meaning will never be achieved.

In preparing this collection for publication I edited each of the essays. In one of the more profound contributions I identified what I took to be an error: The author began the essay in past tense, moved briefly to present tense, then reverted to past tense for the concluding paragraphs. I marched through the essay with my red pen and turned every instance of a present tense verb into past tense, believing I had corrected a simple problem. The author was gentle in his response. “Lost is a living, breathing text,” he wrote. LOST, he said, will continue to speak to us in ways we have not previously understood, and therefore, we do well to express LOST as a present-tense reality. The author was correct on every point. His essay—rendered in its original mixed-tense format—occupies an honored place in our anthology.

It goes without saying that LOST is open to interpretation. But in this nonlinear story we are obliged to go much further in granting analytical license. Not only does LOST live as mutable, organic text, but its design and format change with the redactor. That is, form, substance, and even the text itself must be considered fluid, and entirely subject to the chronologies and priorities applied by each interpreter.

Most contributors to this anthology consider that the meaning of LOST cannot be separated from the interpretation applied by viewers. This is because LOST is an exemplar of nonlinear storytelling; the structural hierarchy of the story’s events, character interactions, and even its cause and effect relationships (etiologies) must be provided by the viewers. Whether LOST is considered a postmodern text or cinematic metadrama, those taking in the drama are not passive observers of unassailable fact, but rather active players in the construction of the presentation. We are not viewers, but participants, not observers, but fellow actors in the play. Strictly speaking, there are no “observers” or “viewers” of LOST, because no mechanism exists for the logical placement of events. If we do not accept our responsibility to engage fully in every scene, if we do not work ceaselessly to divine a narrative structure consonant with every faculty of our minds, we will never uncover the meaning of LOST.

The Excellence of Mittelos

LOST awakens us to our hungers.

All too often we are aware of human existence as drudgery, as numbing compromise preventing the full realization of our potential as beings who ponder, create, and dream. There are realities so grand as to defy complete understanding, truths we can only glimpse in fleeting moments of clarity, destinies that seem to demand our full engagement, and yet elude us in their complexity—or is it their simplicity that challenges us? Perhaps we are comfortable in our mediocrity, happy in our adherences to the well-worn paths of trite stereotype, easy judgment, and social conformity.

Abraham Heschel wrote on our tendency toward inner compromise in Moral Grandeur and Spiritual Audacity:

"We dwell on the edge of mystery and ignore it… Accepting surmises as dogmas and prejudices as solutions, we ridicule the evidence of life for what is more than life. Our mind has ceased to be sensitive to wonder… we lose sight of what fate is, of what living is… How could we have lived in the shadow of greatness and defied it?"

What lies in the shadow of the statue? Ille qui nos omnes servabit. LOST saves us from conformity and stereotype, thrills us in its uncompromising expectation of engagement at every level of spirit, mind, and heart. All of us, we realize, are standing in the shadow of the statue, but we stand in awe, not defying or denying, but seeking, searching, finding value and wonder and delight in Jacob’s Progress, in the discovery of new ways to celebrate our true identity as beings of the Light.

Walking the beaches and jungles of our Island, we’re invigorated, alive to our senses, aware of ourselves and our world as if for the first time. We hunger for the fullness of reality, and we find in LOST the richest, most diverse banquet ever prepared.

The volume you hold in your hands is a contribution to the celebration of our happy place in the shadow of the statue. Nineteen of the best-known bloggers and academic experts on LOST have shared in these pages something of their fascination with Mittelos, and their commitment to discovering those glimpses of Light most visible from a place in the shadow of greatness.

Possibly the most enduring quality of LOST is its rare ability to affect us personally, in ways unique to each of us. The first section of this anthology, therefore, “The Culture of LOST,” treats some of the very personal reactions to this most intimate of television creations. Nikki Stafford (Finding Lost) captures the essence of our individual and social connections to LOST and provides the perfect introduction to a volume deeply affected by the emotional, spiritual, and conceptual bonds that permeate our discourse on this breathtaking television epic. Erika Olson (Long Live Locke) and Jo Garfein (Jopinionated) discuss LOST in its capacity as “culture disguised as television,” while Ryan Ozawa and Andy Page explain the nuts and bolts behind two of the greatest LOST-inspired communication efforts of the early 21st century: The Transmission podcast series and the Dark UFO website.

In the second section, devoted to the mythology of LOST, Dr. Cynthia Burkhead presents one of the most fascinating analyses I have ever read on the place of dreams in LOST. This paper is followed by Jo Garfein’s playful discussion of the Alice in Wonderland allusions that suffuse LOST and point to the major themes of the series. Also in this section, I explain my take on the thesis of LOST, this time concentrating on the Cork Stone as intellectual totem, but weaving together concepts in disorientation, chaos theory, and literary analysis to support my argument.

Jennifer Galicinski and Dr. Paul Wright are the only contributors to the theology section of this anthology, but do not be misled: Theirs is the longest section in the book, and they analyze some of the most intriguing ideas relating to the philosophical and theological underpinnings of LOST. Galicinski’s paper speaks to me at several levels, and I find myself particularly intrigued by the notion that LOST stands in opposition to both modernist and postmodernist ideologies. Dr. Wright’s paper is so dense in its thought, yet so simple in its core message, I gain new insights into the connections he makes every time I read the essay.

LOST peers into the lives not only of the survivors, but of their fathers as well, bringing multi-tiered definition to the generational bonds that were strained, riddled with imperfections, and fundamental to the Island drama. If anything, mothers were more important than fathers, with Rousseau, Claire, and Jacob’s “mother” serving as complex reflection of the nurturing yet wounded Island that could as easily kill as heal. Gozde Kilic addresses “Daddy Issues” in her engaging essay, while Erin Carlyle focuses on the mother image in visual creations that bring new perspective to the Island and its inhabitants.

Adequate comprehension of the multi-faceted nature of LOST requires that we travel numerous connected, intersecting, and parallel paths. The multi-dimensionality of LOST is captured in essays by our largest group of contributors. Dr. Jeffrey Frame provides an engrossing account of four-dimensionalism in LOST, invoking St. Augustine, William Faulkner, and Jeff Jensen to support his point. Kevin McGinnis trains the powerful beam of stoic thought on several specific Island interactions to offer a unique reconciliation between free will and destiny. Sarah Clarke Stuart and I go head to head in a far-flung discussion of our (somewhat!) conflicting theses, and come to a conclusion that may surprise you. Delano Freeberg presents a spirited defense of his interpretation of LOST as a postmodern creation, applying the principles of quantum mechanics to make his point, with several well-studied examples from the show. Finally, Cory Milles looks at LOST as story, describing the manner in which LOST rises to new heights by bringing nuanced emphasis to characters and nonlinear plot. He demonstrates that our connection to the characters and their plight is the result of a very carefully mapped storytelling style that demands viewer participation. By becoming part of the story, we are bound to fictional characters in a way that has not been achieved in any previous television work.

Several characters serve as vehicles for Lindelof and Cuse’s commentary on current social convention and expectation. One of the most challenging characters in this regard was Sayid Jarrah, and the final section of the anthology begins with Jamie Smith’s piercing analysis of the character and his significance to viewer-participants in the West. Smith focuses on the Western appreciation of Islam, and the ways in which LOST forces a reevaluation of our prejudices. Dr. Julia Guernsey-Pitchford juxtaposes LOST with Paradise Lost, demonstrating that the Island plays a pivotal role in directing the development and transformation of major characters. Finally, any LOST anthology in which I am a participant must include an essay on the enigmatic Dr. Christian Shephard. My third and most surprising take on the good doctor serves as the final essay in this volume.

In The Shadow of Greatness

For all our thousands of hours of study, we are but visitors to the Island (Episode 2.11).

MR. FRIENDLY: Let me ask you something. How long you been here on the island?
JACK: Fifty days.
MR. FRIENDLY: Oooo, 50 days. That's what—almost two whole months, huh? Tell me, you go over to a man's house for the first time, do you take off your shoes? Do you put your feet up on his coffee table? Do you walk in the kitchen, eat food that doesn't belong to you? Open the door to rooms you got no business opening? … This is not your island. This is our island. And the only reason you're living on it is because we let you live on it.

Mr. Friendly was wrong. It is not his island. Even Jacob, Jack, and Hurley, important as they are, are but temporary caretakers. People come and go. We fight and we make peace, we destroy and we rebuild. We corrupt and we create because we are Jacob, and we are the Man in Black. We are say-it-like-it-is Hurley and parse-your-words-carefully Ben Linus. But even the broadest collection of polar opposites cannot express the fullness of our beings. We are neither Other nor survivor, neither father nor son, neither slave nor free.

Mr. Friendly got one thing right: This is not our island. With Jacob, Jack, and Hurley, we are visitors. It only ends once, but we never witness the end with our own eyes, we never know the extent to which we contribute to creation and corruption. We can never call the Island our own. Jacob is “not a man you go and see. This is a man who summons you.” (Episode 3.20) If in our ignorance and nonchalance we are unworthy to just “go and see” Jacob, we are far less worthy of an audience with the Protector’s taskmaster, the Island.

Yet the Island is the destiny of everyone onboard Flight 815. That is to say, the Island is our destiny. If we are not worthy to darken the shadow of the statue this is nevertheless where we stand, where destiny bids us abide. We stand in the shadow of greatness. No one can ever own the Island. It is the Island that calls us, directs us, owns us. The Island is our destiny because we do not accept “surmises as dogmas and prejudices as solutions.” The Island compels us to reject the spiritual death of complacency, conformity, and mediocrity. There is nothing compromising or halfway in the Island’s call to exploit every faculty of the mind so that we might ponder, create, and dream.

Here then, in these pages, meditations and missives—dispatches and messages—from the object of our fascination: the Island.

There have been plenty of Lost crossover hints, thought nuggets, time travel mindf—ery, etc. offered up on ABC’s Once Upon a Time. But the Apollo chocolate bar hanging out near a hatch on last night’s episode really SPOKE TO ME. It’s candy, it’s a hidden gem, and I could have sworn the last Apollo had spent the summer melting in a mail/garbage/Dharma peanut butter landfill in the least-accessible corner of Doc Jensen’s office.

Also did anyone else really, really want Des and his lava lamp to be making their own kind of music down in that Storybrooke hatch? First Look at Emilie de Ravin in Once Upon a Time

Emilie de Ravin is getting lost in a whole new fantasy world. On the Valentine's Day episode of ABC's Once Upon a Time, tentatively scheduled for February 12, the former Lost star steps into the slippers of Beauty and the Beast's Belle. "Emilie projects a very natural strength and warmth, which are characteristics we wanted to explore with Belle," explains Adam Horowitz, who, along with writing and producing partner Edward Kitsis, kicked off a six-year stint on Lost writing a Claire scene.

While this take on Beauty will veer from the traditional tale as old as time, Edward says Belle will interact with her father, crazy old Maurice, the brutish Gaston and, of course, the Beast. (Alas, no singing dinnerware.) "We have a fun spin on it," he says. Later this season, expect visits from Aladdin and his genie!

J.J. Abrams Considering Settings From TV’s Lost As “A Jungle Planet” In STAR TREK 2

Star Trek 2 (though it won’t be called that) will begin filming on January 15th, according to TrekMovie.

As we have heard recently director J.J. Abrams has been scouting locations, specifically it’s said in Hawaii for what is being considered as a “jungle planet” for his sequel. Of course J.J. Abrams’ mega successful t.v. show Lost was set in Hawaii and he will know it like the back of his hand. If you look at the image above, you can definitely imagine Kirk, Spock and McCoy beaming down and searching for life forms.

Other locations that have been scouted include a museum in Los Angeles as a stand-in for “a famous Star Trek location” but a big portion will be shot, as ever, on the Paramount lot.

Emilie de Ravin, who played Australian castaway Claire on the ABC island mystery series, has been cast as Belle, as in Beauty and the Beast's Belle, TVGuide.com has learned exclusively.

Details of her role are scarce, but we hear Once's Belle will have a connection to Rumplestiltskin (Robert Carlyle). No word on whether the titular Beast will appear, but Gaston is slated to pop up as well.

Matthew Fox Launches Countersuit in "Alleged" Bust Attack

Fox is countersuing Heather Bormann, who filed her own lawsuit in September, claiming a drunken Fox tried to board a party bus she was driving in Cleveland, Ohio. Bormann alleged Fox attacked her after she ordered him to stay off the bus. That's when Bormann claims Fox struck her in the breast, arm, leg and, of course, the vagina.

Fox alleges in his countersuit ... she's just lying, and in reality he didn't provoke her but she's the one who physically attacked him.

Fox claims he's lost work because TMZ and other media outlets have reported her lawsuit, and she has subjected him to "public hatred, contempt, ridicule and shame."

Fox is suing for unspecified damages.

Maybe it can be of interest for you and your readers and i'm pretty sure that it's an unknown reference to LOST...

I realized that in Crossing Jordan episode 6x02 (2007) titled "Shattered" the actor Sterling Beaumon (...the young Ben) ...(killed himself at the beginning of the episode) leaves a note to his father asking to feed his tourtle called.... LINUS !!!

The episode was produced at the same time of LOST episode 3x20 "The man behind the curtain" (may 2007) ...where Sterling Beaumon plays as "young Linus" for the first time.

I send you 2 screenshots, one of Sterling Beaumon as "Stewart" and another one of the suicide note asking "...feed Linus for me".
...well... it is a sad episode ..the suicide for sexual abuses .... but the mention to a tourtle called Linus it's original and unknown

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) — Damon Lindelof only wanted a gig writing for "Alias" when he agreed to meet with J.J. Abrams about "Lost" -- and the pair threw in lots of wild elements just because they never expected it to get on the air.

One of the main calling cards of the show -- the flashbacks to characters' lives before they crash landed on the island -- was simply a way to cut away from the same old tropical locale. And the out-of-sync storytelling was inspired by Quentin Tarantino's "Pulp Fiction."

If it seemed like the writers were making things up as they went along, by the way, they often were. And also? Lindelof tried to quit the show, again and again.

These were just a few of the admissions Lindelof shared about one of television's most beloved shows Thursday on the seventh anniversary of its first airing on ABC.

Stripped of the complex twists and turns, “Lost” is actually a simple story at it’s heart; the passengers of Oceanic Flight 815 are thrown off course and taken from reality by a storm of Fate, and finding themselves stranded on a tropical island and thus begins the struggle to get home but this is no mere Gilligan’s Island. There is no weekly tease over the heroes getting home using a coconut radio to signal for help, instead LOST pitted the survivors against the universal forces of good and evil. Matthew Fox Arrested for Alleged Assault

Matthew Fox was detained by cops in Cleveland, Ohio Saturday night after allegedly assaulting a woman outside of a bar ... TMZ has learned.

Law enforcement sources at the scene tell us ... the "Lost" star allegedly tried to enter a party bus -- even though he wasn't a guest on the vehicle.

We're told the woman who was driving the bus tried to block Fox from getting on board -- at which point, he allegedly punched her in the breast and the "stomach area."

Fox was handcuffed by an off-duty officer -- and was later detained by police.

Fox was released without being formally arrested.

An assault report was taken and the matter remains under investigation.

We have not been able to reach Fox for comment.

UPDATE: According to the police report, obtained by TMZ, the woman PUNCHED BACK -- and struck Fox "in the mouth ... causing a cut on his lip."

The woman told police she may have broken her hand during the altercation.

Fox was later released to a friend ... who put the actor into a taxi and accompanied him back to his hotel.

A couple of months ago, we reported that Lost star Matthew Fox had dropped out of the upcoming movie World War Z. But Fox has either had a change or heart or a change of contract, because we've got proof he's still on board.

And on board is where we find him in the set photos below. He looks shipshape and ready for zombie action.

We also get to see Brad Pitt and a ragtag group of humans. Sadly, we don't see any zombies, but hey, we know they're out there: World War Z recounts tales of survival during the zombie apocalypse. The movie, based on the book by Max Brooks, will be hitting theaters in summer 2012.

As you may be aware, LOST had a panel at Comic-Con where there were surprise guests in Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse; the "spat" between the executive producers on Twitter merely a ruse to hide their appearances...

The executive producers answered the question of whether they truly did know the ending of the show way back in season one by shocking the crowd by announcing there is footage they deleted from the 'Exodus,' Cuse calling it "too much."

Dark UFO is giving away copies of LOST Identity, the new LOST book by Pearson Moore, to ten lucky readers. LOST Identity is Pearson Moore’s second book, devoted to nineteen of the most popular characters in the series.

Terry O'Quinn joins Hawaii Five-0

Terry O’Quinn is going baaaack to the island.

In what marks the most high-profile Lost reunion since the ABC phenom signed off last year, O’Quinn is joining the cast of CBS’ Hawaii Five-0 in a pivotal recurring role.

The gig not only brings the Emmy winner back to the Aloha State, but it reunites him with Lost castmate and Five-0 regular Daniel Dae Kim.

O’Quinn will play a Navy Seal Lt. Commander who trained Alex O’Loughlin’s McGarrett in Coronado, and served with his father in Vietnam. Described as strong, stubborn and a man you want in your corner when things go south, the character holds some of the answers to the mysteries surrounding the respective murders of McGarrett’s mother and father.

Hollywood has seen its fair share of odd couplings, but this one is so out there even the newlyweds know it's a little weird.

Doug Hutchison, a character actor best known for roles in The Green Mile, Lost and The X-Files, married aspiring country singer Courtney Alexis Stodden on May 20 in Las Vegas.

He is 51. She is 16.

Is there something fishy about it? In an exclusive statement to E! News, the couple insists there's not.

With Stodden, a former beauty pageant queen (she was in the running for Miss Teen Washington USA last year), trying to position herself as a potential Nashville star, you might think there's more to the story than middle-age actor marrying pretty teenager (and that's a lot of story, itself). However, the newlyweds tell us they're just mad about each other.

"We're aware that our vast age difference is extremely controversial," the couple said through their spokeswoman.

"But we're very much in love and want to get the message out there that true love can be ageless."

The beach scene below is the just-for-fun introduction to my second LOST book, LOST Identity, focussing on the characters of LOST. This is the introduction as it will appear in the book, minus the brand new, never-before-seen illustration by ArtGUS. As promised several months ago, LOST Identity will include several new illustrations by the master of LOST character portraiture.

I understand Dark UFO is running a contest. This is an unedited version of the introduction, so you'll want to read closely! If you read carefully, you will discover a clue to the character profiled in Chapter One. Enjoy!

Introduction to LOST Identity

“It’s all about the characters.”

The anxious-looking inspector stopped on the jungle path, peered into the young woman’s face, and frowned. “Wait a minute!” The man’s eyes bulged out and he anchored his hands at his hips. “You told me two months ago it’s not about the characters. So which is it?”

She shook her head. “That’s not what I said. I told you it was all about relationships.” She dropped her rifle to the ground and massaged her shoulder.

“Relationships?” The inspector’s mouth hung open.

“Yes,” the young woman said, dropping down to a crouch, “relationships. She glanced up at him. “Didn’t you already send in your report?”

The inspector nodded. “Two months ago. I recommended ‘LOST Humanity.’ I told ‘em it was all about the mythology.”

“No.” The young woman shook her head. “The mythology is all about relationships. Everything on the Island is about the characters.” She adjusted the strap on her rifle.

A voice from the jungle: “It’s not about guns, that’s for sure.”

The inspector, surprised by the familiar voice, pivoted on his foot. The older woman approaching them wore a pleasant smile on her face and an orchid on her blouse. Her hair was beginning to grey, but she was otherwise exactly the same as she had been during the first six years.

“Hey,” the young woman said, rising to her feet, “where’s Bernard?”

The older woman laughed. “He and Vincent are out ‘fishing’—that’s what he calls it, anyway. He never catches anything, but it’s not for lack of trying. I didn’t know you were back on the Island. Aren’t you staying with Aaron and Claire?”

“Aaron’s on summer vacation,” the young woman said. “Claire told me to take a break.”

The older woman nodded. “Who’s your friend?”

The young woman replaced the rifle on her shoulder. “He’s an inspector.” She glanced at him. “University of Michigan, right?”

“Yeah,” the inspector said, wiping the sweat from his brow. “Ann Arbor campus.”

The young woman adjusted the rifle strap to a more comfortable position. “He came here a couple of months ago, doing research for a book. It was good.”

“You read it?” the inspector asked.

She nodded. “Every page.”

“Oh,” the older woman said, “‘LOST Humanity.’ The one you loaned me last month. Bernard and I loved it.” She turned to the inspector. “You wrote it?”

The inspector shook his head.

The young woman pulled a water bottle from her belt. “Some pharmaceutical scientist wrote it. He confirmed everything I believe about the Island.”

The older woman smiled knowingly and nodded. “It’s all about the characters.”

“What?” the inspector shouted.

The two women looked at him with shocked expressions.

“Have you both lost your minds?” He glared at the older woman. “How can you say ‘LOST Humanity’ was all about the characters? The book focussed on the mythology of the show. It had nothing to do with the characters!”

The older woman shifted her gaze to the jungle brush and frowned. She seemed deep in thought for a moment, but then she pushed back her shoulders and looked over at the inspector, her face taut and resolute. “Follow me.” The older woman strode past the instructor, heading toward the beach.

The young woman choked on her water but managed to replace the bottle on her belt in a single motion. She took fast strides to catch up with the older woman and the inspector followed.

“Where—” the inspector struggled to catch his breath “—where are we going?”

“There.” The older woman pointed through the clearing to a couple of figures sitting on the sand close to the trees. She glanced down at the young woman’s belt. “Knife,” she said, pointing to the sheathed hunting blade at the young woman’s side.

The young woman quickly unbuckled the knife case, dropped it to the dirt, and looked up at the inspector. “You need to remove all your knives and leave them here.”

“Why?”

“Trust me,” she said, “it’s just easier.”

The older woman already stood by the side of the two men sitting near the tree and seemed to be in animated discussion with the long-haired man. The young woman led the way. The inspector tried his best to keep up with her but he lost ground with every effortless step she took across the hot sand.

The men on the beach faced each other across a familiar brown board. The inspector recognised the millionaire Protector of the Island and his one-time nemesis, now assistant—the person the Protector called “Number Two.”

By the time he reached the sand the women were already at the side of the men playing backgammon and the inspector had to run to catch up. Just as he approached the four of them, the Protector waved to him and gave a big grin.

“Welcome back, dude,” the Protector said. “I thought you were done with your report?”

“Thank you, sir. I am done, but I had to come back. Apparently the University is considering a second LOST book for their curriculum. They asked me to conduct more research, sir.”

“Aw, you don’t have to ‘sir’ me, dude. Just ‘Hurley’ is fine.”

“But,” Number Two said, peering at the inspector with stern eyes, “please keep your knife sheathed.”

The inspector peered at the young woman with a quizzical expression. “What’s the problem with knives?”

The young woman lifted the rifle off her shoulder and dropped the butt to the ground. “Ben doesn’t allow drawn knives in Hurley’s presence. The last guy who tried it just wanted to cut rope. Ben had him sprawled on the dirt before he could get the knife out.”

The inspector frowned. “But he allows guns?”

The young woman grabbed the rifle, rammed the butt against her shoulder, aimed it at the Protector, and wrapped her finger around the trigger. The inspector gasped.

The Protector laughed and looked over at Number Two. “Hey, dude, it’s your turn.”

Number Two rolled the dice. “You can shoot the Protector all you like,” he said, not bothering to look up. He moved two of the white pieces on the board.

“Believe me,” the older woman said, “Kate has personal experience in this matter.”

The young woman laughed and lowered the gun back down to her side. “Save your bullets, a guy told me once.”

“The Man in Black,” the inspector said.

The Protector and the young woman frowned and looked away.

The older woman took a couple of steps toward the inspector and leaned in close. “Around here,” she whispered, “we don’t mention Him Who Shall Not Be Named. It’s because of him that Kate’s a widow.”

“A widow?” the inspector asked. “But they never got—”

The older woman’s angry glare stopped the inspector from completing his sentence.

The young woman peered down at Number Two. “Why do you even play him, Ben? You never win.”

“It’s not whether you win or lose,” Number Two said, “it’s how—”

“It’s how the Protector plays the game,” the older woman said, finishing Number Two’s sentence.

Number Two looked up at the older woman and gave a half smile. “Exactly.”

The Protector rolled the dice and two fours came up.

Number Two’s eyes grew big. “Eight, Hugo!”

The Protector jumped to his feet, took a step forward, a step back, gyrated his hips, and danced around the board. The two women laughed. The inspector stared, dumbfounded.

The young woman peered into the inspector’s face. “It’s Hurley’s number, remember?”
“Aha.” The inspector turned to the Protector, who had resumed his place and was moving black pieces on the board. “So the numbers are important?”

“Naw,” the Protector said. “Ben just gets a kick out of it when I do the Eight Dance.”

The inspector frowned. “But what about the Valenzetti Equation? The Dharma Initiative? Preventing the end of the world?”

The Protector turned around and glared at the inspector. “Dude, the numbers don’t mean anything. The Dharma people, they were wacked out. They had that Valenzetti thing ‘cause they didn’t know any better.” His expression softened. “Anyway, you make your own luck. Didn’t you see ‘Tricia Tanaka Is Dead’?”

“Yes, but—”

“What Hugo’s trying to say,” Number Two said, “is that human volition transcends laws of science. Even the Valenzetti Equation, well researched as it may be, cannot account for the variability of human response to a given situation.”

“Yeah,” the Protector said, shifting his eyes around. “What he said.”

“So,” the inspector asked, directing his gaze at Number Two, “you’re saying the entire mythology of this Island has no meaning?”

“No, not at all. Every last bit of the mythology has meaning. In fact, the Island has so much meaning it determines the limits of life and death. Number One and I are still learning. Not even Jacob understood everything. Jack Shephard was the only one who ever put all the pieces together, and he saved the Island—he saved all of us. He told Desmond, ‘There are no shortcuts, no do-overs. What happened, happened. Trust me, I know. All of this matters.’ Number One and I live by those words, every day.” Number Two turned his attention back to the game.

“But...” the inspector couldn’t find words to express his thought. He turned to the young woman. “If it all comes down to the characters, how could anything on the Island matter?”

The young woman frowned and gazed down at the two players. She stared at them for several moments then turned to face the inspector. Her eyes were intense. “Hurley and Ben are playing backgammon, right?”

“Yeah.”

“So,” she said, “what if the Island makes it rain here?”

“I suppose they’d put up a tarp, or go play inside.”

“But they’re still having to change what they’re doing because of the Island, right?”
“Yeah, but it’s just common sense.”

“Okay, but suppose now it’s not Hurley and Ben playing, but it’s Claire and Thomas.”
The inspector frowned. “Who’s Thomas?”

“Claire’s boyfriend, back in Australia, remember?”

The inspector slapped his hand to his forehead and smiled. “Right.”

“Okay, now suppose they’re not playing backgammon, but they’re playing ‘let’s make a baby’, and they’re on the Island before Jack fixed everything.”

“Then I’d say Claire’s in deep trouble.”

“She’ll die, right?”

“Unless Juliet’s drug can prevent the effects high-field electromagnetism.”

“Right. Now, is that ‘just common sense’, too?”

“I see what you’re saying. The Island affected everything.”

The young woman raised her eyebrows. “The Island had its own personality.”

Number Two looked up from his game. “An extraordinary personality. And because of that, our actions and what we believed about the Island and about each other took on tremendous importance.”

“And,” the young woman said, “our relationships with each other.”

The older woman nodded. “It’s all about the relationships.”

The inspector gazed at the older woman. “You’re talking about the Constant Relationship, the Strange Attractor Relationship, the—”

She shook her head. “We don’t call it that. You think I call Bernard my ‘Constant’?”

The Protector looked up at them. “Yeah, and that ‘Strange Attractor’ stuff? Dude, that’s so twisted. The argument wasn’t over truth and lies. Ben doesn’t lie anymore.”

The older woman crossed her arms. “It wasn’t for lack of trying.”

The Protector stood up and faced the older woman. “Yeah, but I mean, it wasn’t about telling the truth or telling lies. It was about thinking things through. See, Ben thinks about things, then he figures out what to do. I need that ‘cause, well... I don’t always think about things before I do something.”

Number Two chimed in. “Hugo doesn’t need to think things through, Rose. He has a built-in sense of right and wrong—something I wish I had more of. He knows instinctively what to do.”

“Yeah,” the Protector said, shifting his focus to Number Two, “maybe. But you explain stuff to me, dude. That helps.”

Number Two looked down and smiled. “That’s my job, Hugo.”

“Wait a minute,” the inspector said, frowning at the Protector, “You’re saying ‘LOST Humanity’ got it all wrong?”

“No, I’m not sayin’ that. I’m just, well...”

Number Two placed the dice on the board and looked up at the inspector. “You have to consider the person who wrote ‘LOST Humanity.’ He’s a scientist.”

“Pharmaceutical chemist,” the young woman said.

“Yes,” Number Two said, rising to his feet. “He invoked aspects of chaos theory, and especially the notion of strange attractors, as a model for understanding human interaction between characters. He wasn’t trying to say ‘this is how it is.’ He was proposing a model, that’s all. It was just a way of looking at things intended to help us understand.”

“Some characters more than others,” the young woman said, frowning. “He never wrote about Libby.”

The Protector looked down at the sand and shrugged. “Some characters are more important than others.”

“She was important to you,” the young woman said. “Therefore she was important.”
“Yeah,” the Protector said. “But if I was writin’ about the characters, I’d do it right.”

“What do you mean?” the inspector asked.

“I mean, I’d start from the very beginning, with the very first character.”

“Jack?” the older woman asked.

“No,” Number Two said, “I think he means—”

“No!” The older woman’s jaw dropped. “You can’t seriously mean you’d devote an entire chapter to a—”

“Look,” the Protector said, “It’s not just that he was the first character. He appeared in more episodes than Jacob, Christian Shephard, and Eloise Hawking combined.”

The older woman stared at him in disbelief. “You are serious?”

The Protector nodded. “I am.” He turned to the inspector. “You wanna write another book about the Island? You gotta start with the first character, the most loyal character.”

The inspector frowned. “But I’m not—”

“Kate,” the Protector said, glancing at the young woman, “you like writing: Tell him how to start his new book.”

“Okay,” the young woman said. Her knitted brow revealed deep concentration. “I think I’d try to set the mood. It has to be done right, because he was the only major character who never uttered a word. Maybe passive voice, even though it’s usually weaker. Hmmm... Maybe I’d begin with something like, ‘The very first episode was told from his point of view...’”

ODI LOST Podcast 74 - We Have to Go Back - Pilot Episode: Jack

Hey Everyone!
Hope you are all doing great?? So as promised we are back to do more LOST podcasts!

The whole team is back including myself, Vozzek aka Danny and of course fan favorite and Queen of LOST and rock star Karen!

So when we started chatting about what we should do for our new podcasts we threw several ideas around but one of the central themes was to look back at some of the earlier mysteries, subjects, episodes and more based on what we all now know or think we know. ;)

So we felt that we should start all the way back at Season 1 with the Pilot episode and then work our way through the seasons focusing on several topics, characters and mysteries. Not really going episode to episode in a traditional rewatch, but to tackle the major points. So it will vary with each podcast until we find some sort of set formula. Of course if you guys have thoughts, questions, ideas or topics you want us to cover we are an open book and this is your opportunity to hear our thoughts.

These new podcasts might not be as long as our traditional recap podcasts, but we are still having a bunch of fun and talking about crazy ideas. Also, we will do our best to keep it real and relate it to how the show ended.

So enough of my thoughts, we all are really excited to be doing this again and we look forward to trying to give you all some podcasts on a regular basis. I doubt it will be weekly, but maybe every couple of weeks or so. Make sure you let all of your Lostie friends know we are back and that they should subscribe again if they unsubscribed.

Mark Pellegrino to star in The Closer

Lost's Jacob is coming to the aid of The Closer. Actor Mark Pellegrino, who also played Supernatural's Lucifer, will recur on the TNT series beginning in mid-August.

Pellegrino will play Brenda's high-powered defense attorney Gavin Baker, described by executive producer James Duff as "brisk, gay and formidable. He is ruthless in court and still manages to project an air of friendly professionalism."

Mark's character specializes in defending police officers in civil actions. Brenda will require his help after she is sued by the family of a gang member she placed in harm's way. "Though he is easy to like, Gavin is extremely dangerous to underestimate," Duff adds. "He is the only person on earth who can make Brenda hang up her cell phone."

New Video game ripping of Lost's Smoke Monster?

A new videogame for Xbox 360 was announced today titled Fable The Journey and in its trailer not only does it seem like they have their own version of the smoke monster but to me anyway its so simila (right down to the electrical noises!) it looks like borderline plagiarism/copyright theft, that is if you can trademark a travelling cloud of smoke!

As you all know being the huge LOST fans that you are, one year ago today LOST ended with it's feature length episode 'The End' which is sure to be one of the most debated, critically divided and momentous moments in TV history.

To reflect on the fact that we've all been 365 days without what I still believe is the greatest TV show to have ever existed, this is your chance to talk about what you think of the show as a whole now, what you made of 'The End', what LOST means to you, your favourite moments in the show and being within the LOST community.

For me LOST really got me into the world of television, and I wouldn't be doing the stuff I do over on SpoilerTV without the community and devotion that LOST put so many people into. The incredible fact is that if DarkUFO had not fallen in love with the show, then this website and SpoilerTV would not have even existed...
I think everyone who loved the show, loved it because they connected with it's rich and relatable collection of flawed but heroic characters; I'm sure even though the island life looked tough, we all wished we were there living it with them.

Writing this makes me want to walk over to my shelf and take off my blu-ray LOST collection and sit down and watch 121 episodes of pure gold...

Evangeline Lilly gives birth to baby boy

Lost alum Evangeline Lilly gave birth to a baby boy. This is the first child for Lilly, 31, and boyfriend Norman Kali, who worked as a production assistant on the ABC hit.

Lilly recently spoke about how she was happy to be moving on from the show. "People are excited to try on the next chapter of their lives," she told New York Magazine. "This show is all-encompassing. We have had very little experience outside of the show during the last six years because it's just so demanding; it requires so much of us. So, it's exciting to have your freedom back, essentially."

And the Golden Globe nominee, who dated costar Dominic Monaghan from 2004-2009, said that said she wanted to take a hiatus from show business for a while.

"I'm definitely planning on taking a break for a little while," she said. "I consider acting a day job -- it's not my dream; it's not my be-all, end-all."

Looking for where Lost’s Nestor Carbonell can be found next? Check out the new FX comedy Wilfred, which features Elijah Wood as a troubled individual who sees his neighbor’s canine as a guy in a dog suit. EW has learned that Carbonell will guest star as a doctor in one episode, while John Michael Higgins (A Mighty Wind) and Peter Stormare (Prison Break) are also slated to pop up this season. Other Wilfred guest stars include Chris Klein, Rashida Jones, Ed Helms, Mary Steenburgen, and Jane Kaczmarek. The series debuts June 23.

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment’s Lost: The Complete Collection and 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment’s Alien Anthology Blu-ray were the big winners of the inaugural Home Media Magazine Awards, which honored the best DVDs and Blu-ray Discs of 2010.

Lost: The Complete Collection earned the top prize of Title of the Year, as well as TV DVD of the Year, Best TV on Blu-ray, Best Complete-Series TV DVD Set and Best Trinkets/Collectibles. The series boxed set included a map of the show’s island setting, as well as a blacklight to read hidden messages, a game and more. In addition, Lost: The Complete Sixth Season was named Best Current Series TV DVD, a category for discs with episodes that aired during the most recent TV season (2009-10).

First Look at Josh Holloway Back in Action

When I last saw Josh Holloway in Hawaii during the final months of Lost, he was a proud new dad excited about the possibility of becoming a movie star. Well, mission accomplished! On December 16, Josh will appear with Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol as Impossible Missions Force Secret Agent Hanaway.

"He is a cocky badass who is single but involved with someone," says Josh. The top-secret mission took Josh from Vancouver to Prague. "Tom gave me great advice on my stunts, which were bigger than anything I'd done on Lost," he says. "He told me, 'This is your set. Hang out anytime you want.' He really put me at ease."

Leading up to his big PR push with Mr. Cruise, Josh has united with Nature Valley (yes, the granola company) to aid endangered tortoises in Joshua Tree National Park, as well as gain support for the National Parks Conservation Association. "I love outdoors, so the message is right up my alley," explains Josh, who turns down many more offers than he accepts. Case in point, he says he passed on three television pilots, including a chance to reteam with former costar Michael Emerson (Ben) in Lost creator J.J. Abrams' Person of Interest for CBS.

But he couldn't resist the chance to play paintball with pal Chevy Chase in Community's May 5 episode as a mystery man named Black Rider who first crosses paths with Annie on campus (the paintball action continues in Part 2 of the finale the following week). "Chevy was a huge Lost fan who used to call me at random times and leave me funny messages," Josh says. "So when this opportunity came up, I said, 'Heck yeah!'"
