Hey All,
It has been about a week since the LOST series finale has aired and I hope you all are doing good!
Earlier this week we asked you to send in some questions and we received so many great questions! There is of course no way to answer each one but in this bonus podcast we answer several of the common questions that were sent in and provide you with our initial thoughts about the finale.
We are working on our Finale Recap podcast and it will most likely be in two to three parts so keep your eyes open for those. Also since so many great questions were sent in we will try to do another bonus podcast to answer some more.
In the mean time I hope you all enjoy this podcast and once again thanks for all the comments and questions!
That is correct! If you listen to this podcast we provide you with details on how to enter and how you can possibly win this awesome prize!
Good luck and enjoy!

Across The Sea,
Lost Fantasy League,
Season 6
My deepest apologies to all of you Lost fans who have been waiting weeks for this post. Between my new job and a busy schedule, things have gotten awfully backed up. But fear not, the LFL will come to a close soon! Today I've posted the scores for "Across the Sea." We hope to lump "What They Died For" and "The End" together possibly by Friday or sometime next weekend. It will all depend on how difficult it is to score the finale and make all the necessary point adjustments.
"Across the Sea" wasn't really a game-changing episode. It didn't do much in the way of providing momentum for our Character Group leaders but it did shuffle some of our League Leaders a bit. Plus, we had a ridiculous number of Fantasy Geniuses of the Week, so check that section out to see if you are in it!
Overall, "Across the Sea" amassed only 605 points but I think we'll see the scores jump significantly over the last two episodes of the season. There were some point adjustments made this week, so be sure to check those out or you may be confused by your scores for the week.
So check out this week's content and brace yourselves for a double-whammy season-ending post (hopefully) within the next 7 days. The end is near, Lost fans, and our lovely prizes await our winner!
Lost Fantasy Team Lookup Table | LFL on Facebook | G-Man on Twitter | Email G-Man
Some of the following points adjustments were made based on information learned from "What They Died For."
POINT ADJUSTMENTS FOR EPISODE 6.04 "THE SUBSTITUTE"
1) Man In Black and Smokey lose one set of New Person points in exchange for two doses of Jacob Encounter points. Now that we definitively know that the mysterious jungle kid was Jacob, I went back and adjusted these scores.
2) Sawyer exchanges New Person points for Encounters Jacob points. Sawyer saw kid Jacob in the jungle during this episode and they had already met in the past.
3) Jacob picks up two doses of Encounters the Smoke Monster points. These were both in his kid form.
POINT ADJUSTMENTS FOR EPISODE 6.12 "EVERYBODY LOVES HUGO"
1) MIB and Smokey pick up an extra set of Encounters Jacob points. This was when we saw the jungle boy again.
2) Desmond snags New Person points and Encounters Jacob points. Desmond was with MIB when they saw the boy. So far, Jacob and Desmond have never met before.
3) Jacob picks up New Person points, Attendance points and Encounters the Smoke Monster points. All of this was while he was in his kid form.
IMPORTANT POINT RULINGS FOR EPISODE 6.15 "ACROSS THE SEA"
1) This episode is considered an on-Island flashback. There was no actual flashing but we decided to consider it such because it shows the history of Jacob and MIB on the Island.
2) The clips of Jack, Kate and Locke in the caves are not flashforwards. We decided that they were merely used to reiterate the fact that the bodies of MIB and "Mother" were found later on. These clips only scored points for what happened within them.
3) Ghost Claudia counts as an Island Vision. Since the Smoke Monster didn't exist yet, we're ruling that MIB seeing his birth mother is a true Island Vision.
4) For this episode only, the Smoke Monster and MIB are earning points separately. Until MIB became the Smoke Monster, only MIB gets points. Once the transformation occurs, they both earn points simultaneously. This is because the Smoke Monster has always been MIB but MIB has not always been the Smoke Monster.
5) Jacob is not charged with killing MIB. Their 'mother' said that they could not kill each other so we took this as fact. MIB's essence was transformed into the Smoke Monster and his body was discarded. Jacob still loses points for knocking MIB out before throwing him into the Light Cave.
SEASON 6 EPISODE TOTALS:

Holy frozen donkey wheels Lost fans! We had an astounding 58 Fantasy Geniuses of the Week! On top of that, they were all perfect picks for the week! Sure, you can try and handicap their achievement by saying that there were only 6 League Characters present, representing only 5 of our Character Groups but the fact remains that they all picked the best characters for the week and everyone else didn't. Everyone listed below scored 570 points for the week by having Jack, MIB, Locke, Jacob and Smokey on their teams! Congratulations to this week's Geniuses:

BURBANK, CA, May 27, 2010 – Since its highly-anticipated premiere in September 2004, ABC’s LOST has revolutionized primetime television, bringing big-screen adventures home with a powerful story of survival. Attracting a massive fan following and huge critical acclaim, LOST has already become a pop culture phenomenon. Now, celebrating television’s most original and creative series, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment proudly debuts Lost: The Complete Sixth and Final Season and Lost: The Complete Collection - both on Blu-ray and DVD, August 24.
With the release of Lost: The Complete Sixth and Final Season, audiences can relive every episode in the landmark final season, as the fate of each character and answers to long-pondered mysteries from the previous seasons, are revealed. In addition, the Blu-ray and DVD releases contain hours of never-before-seen bonus footage including deleted scenes; bloopers; an often emotional featurette where cast, crew, writers, producers and other Hollywood notables discuss ending the acclaimed series; a much-anticipated new chapter of the island's story from Executive Producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse; and much more.
An epic box set for the ultimate LOST fan, Lost: The Complete Collection is a fantastic icon-clad, secret-laden, Blu-ray and DVD box set containing every episode, from all six seasons. Additionally, the elaborate release includes over 30 hours of bonus material (from every season), plus one full disc of bonus exclusive to the collection, containing a fascinating array of all-new behind-the-scenes featurettes; documentaries; and a series of unique tours of Oahu with many of the cast as they reflect anecdotes, experiences and emotions of working on the series and living on the island; and more (see page 3 for content descriptions).
"...TV's most gripping serial." - The Boston Globe
Lost follows the lives of crash survivors of Oceanic Airlines flight 815, on a mysterious and apparently supernatural tropical island. Their survival is continuously jeopardized by inexplicable entities, including a polar bear, an unseen monster that wanders the jungle and the island’s malicious occupants known as the “Others”. Forced to depend on each other to endure, the diverse group of survivors are bound by menacing secrets and complicated interrelationships, with the truth behind each character slowly revealed through the seasons. The series regularly stars Matthew Fox (Jack Shephard), Evangeline Lilly (Kate Austen), Josh Holloway (James ‘Sawyer” Ford), Naveen Andrews (Sayid Jarrah), Jorge Garcia (Hugo ‘Hurley’ Reyes), Terry O’Quinn (John Locke), Michael Emerson (Ben Linus), Daniel Dae Kim (Jin Kwon), Yunjin Kim (Sun Kwon), Nester Carbonell (Richard Alpert) and Emile de Ravin (Claire Littleton).

Now that my recap is out of the way, I've had a chance to read other people's thoughts on the finale. Not surprisingly, it looks like there are two extremes: those who really loved it, and those who hated it to the point of burning their disc sets.
I've also gotten asked a lot of questions regarding my thoughts on the island, so I figured I'd post some additional thoughts here.
The way I see it, the island is what you make of it. Do I think it's real? Yes. But in a sense, it's also a place where you're in control of your own experience. The catch however, is this: most people don't realize they have such power until the end, like Jack did. Until you have the faith to free yourself of your self-imposed bonds (like Rose and Bernard did), you're always going to be held prisoner by your very own thoughts, fears, and past ideologies.

UPDATE: The video of Emerson's interview where he confirms this information is posted on the Media Mentions section of the site for those that want to check it out.
UPDATE: As many fans have pointed out, this epilogue will be available on the COMPLETE COLLECTION not just the Season 6 DVD.
So for those wondering what happened with Ben and Hurley after the Ajira plane takes off, well you are in luck! Apparently there are an additional 12-14 minutes that will be an "epilogue" that will be included on the Season 6 DVD set.
Of course this is a part of ABC's way of making some more money, but at least there is more footage to see. Also some are speculating this is where we will see Walt.
Here is the story from E! Online:
One more reason to love Michael Emerson: He just spilled the goods on an amazing surprise for any Lost fan planning to buy the final, sixth-season DVD. (And trust me, now all of you will be buying it.)
There will be more Lost. There is more to the story, and we will get to see it! Praise Jacob! Or should we say…Hurley?!
“For those people that want to pony up and buy the complete Lost series, there is a bonus feature,” Michael just told our Kevin Pereira of Attack of the Show!, which airs tonight at 7 on E!’s brother network G4. “Which is um, you could call it an epilogue. A lost scene. It’s a lot; it’s 12 or 14 minutes that opens a window onto that gap of unknown time between Hurley (Jorge Garcia) becoming number one and the end of the series.”

THINGS I NOTICED - THE END
There are no words, really.
Nothing I can say here will compare to the thoughts, feelings, and rush of emotions I'm sure everyone is going through right now. For us the ride has finally ended. The lap bar has come up. There's nothing left to do now but stagger away from LOST's roller coaster, move forward, and try to burn the amazing image of this six-year ride into our hearts and minds forever.
I've often said that LOST is a perspective-based experience, and the series finale proved this point more than anything. For some people, they simply need more. They yank down on the lap bar in frustration, defiantly hoping there's something else to this ride. Maybe they expected a full disclosure of the island's blueprints, or comprehensive answers to everything. Or perhaps the answers they got weren't satisfactory to them, or the story's conclusion didn't fit their preconceived mold of how the show would end.

Thanks to Owen for the heads up.
From all of us who made the show, we really hope that you don’t feel it was a waste of your time. We hope that you spent the entire night not just thinking about the finale on a story level, but that you were emotionally affected by it.
There are two feelings that you feel when you watch the ending of a television show. The first is the feeling that you have of just understanding that the show is over and the second is what your response is to actually what’s happening on the screen.
What I liked about the Soprano’s finale was that it changed the experience because when Chase cut to black, suddenly that feeling of “the show’s over” was replaced by “is my cable out?” – he kind of changed the conversation about it.
For us, we tried to write the last two and a half hours of the show so that those two feelings would feel like they were the same thing. So, you’re feeling of saying goodbye to the show – of the show not being around anymore – was actually literally perfectly paralleling what we were showing you on the screen.
If you had an experience anything like that, then it was mission accomplished.
If you didn’t, we blew it and I apologize.

Hey All,
So it has been a few days and I know many are still upset and will never change their opinions about the end of LOST. Some of you are still wondering about things while some are satisfied and content.
Where ever you are on that range we want to hear from all of you. Please send in any questions you have about the finale or the show in general and we will pick the top questions to answer and provide you with our thoughts.
We are still planning on doing several podcasts about the show and finale, but the recap one will take some time to record and edit. So in the meantime we thought it would be cool to just take some of the common questions from the fans and do our best to provide you with our thoughts for a special Finale Bonus podcast.
If you have just a comment please post them as well and we will maybe read some of those also.
Yes, we were way off with many of our theories, maybe you want to know our take on those now? Maybe you want to know how Vozzek was feeling when Frank flew the plane off the island? Maybe you want to know what Karen thinks of the potential "Matrix" or video game theory?
We had a feeling something was not right about the ALT world, but not necessarily purgatory. Send in questions about the ALT Purgatory world?
Also, maybe you want to know how much I knew via spoilers?
Ask away!
You can post questions below in the comment section or at the following link:

The End
"It only ends once. Anything that happens before that is just progress." - Jacob
What we just saw was not that solitary "end" that Jacob spoke of. The true end lies worlds beyond whatever awaits our characters on the other side of the door in the church. The story of Lost has always been about the progress made along the way. When Oceanic Flight 815 crashed on an island in the Pacific, the characters moved from their world to another, better world. Tonight, they moved from that better world to the next one, which will be even better.
Though we won't be shown any more of their adventure, the adventure isn't over. It's up to our imaginations to fill in whatever form their story takes from now on. In any case, I will elaborate on this theory (and provide some pretty good support for why I really think it's the correct one) down below.
Now, while I've seen plenty of support for the finale so far in the comments, I've also read through a considerable amount of resentment. Let me be clear: I've had problems with season 6. I've been frustrated by the way some storylines have been more or less completely abandoned, and I've groaned at having had to spend a lot of time in a reality where the characters didn't seem like they were really the characters I knew.
That said, this finale was fantastic -nearly perfect, even. For those of you who didn't like it, I'm sorry that Lost ends on such a low note for you, but I certainly don't agree.

One of our users, BookhouseBoy, from the Forum, has started to compile a couple of interesting threads.
These threads take a look back after an episode has aired and looks at all the spoilers that were posted for it and how much we knew and how accurate our spoilers have been. Thankfully so far it's been pretty damn good ;). All our sources for example all rated What Kate Does as the lowest rated episode out of the 8-9 episodes that they had seen, and this appears to have been the consensus of the fans if you look at the current polls/episode table.
Take a look at threads below. We'll be updating this each week so that those of you who do not follow spoilers can see what was spoiled about the episodes that have aired.
Episode 6.01/6.02 - LA X
Episode 6.03 - What Kate Does
Episode 6.04 - The Substitute

Here is ABC's spin on the numbers.
Sunday Night (7:00-11:00 p.m.)
With the series finale of "Lost," ABC posted a definitive victory on the final Sunday night of the 2010 May Sweep and 2009-10 TV Season, leading its nearest competition by 2.3 million viewers (11.4 million vs. 9.1 million - CBS) and by 100% in Adults 18-49 (4.8/14 vs. 2.4/7 - NBC). Winning the evening for 4th time in 5 weeks among Adults 18-49, ABC registered its 6th straight May Sweep as Sunday's No. 1 TV network in the key young adult sales demo.
* Excluding the nights of its "Academy Awards" broadcasts, ABC marked its strongest Sunday in nearly 2-1/2 years among Adults 18-49 - since 12/2/07.
"Lost: The Final Journey" (7:00-9:00 p.m.)
From 7:00-9:00 p.m., "Lost: The Final Journey" (a retrospective covering the series' 6 seasons) drew an average audience of 9.8 million viewers and a 4.0/13 in Adults 18-49 to win its time period on both counts.
* The "Lost" recap special generated ABC's best non-"Oscar" Adult 18-49 number in the 2-hour time slot since November 2007 - since 11/25/07.
"Lost" (9:00-11:30 p.m.)
Surging from its lead-in at 9:00 p.m., the 2-1/2 hour series finale of "Lost" pulled in an average audience of 13.5 million viewers and a 5.8/15 in Adults 18-49 to stand as the No. 1 TV show on Sunday night on both counts. "Lost" soared to the top of its time period, beating out its nearest network competition (NBC's season finale of "Celebrity Apprentice" from 9:00-11:00 p.m.) by 4.2 million viewers by 71% in Adults 18-49. In addition, Lost registered as TV's highest-rated drama finale this season in Adults 18-49.
* In Total Viewers and Adults 18-49, "Lost" generated its biggest finale in 3 years - since 5/23/07. It was the series' strongest telecast overall since February 2008 in viewers and young adults- since 2/21/08 and 2/14/08, respectively.
* ABC estimates that 20.5 million unique viewers watched the series finale of "Lost" during its 2-1/2 hour broadcast - unduplicated viewers that watched 6-minutes or more of the program.
"Jimmy Kimmel Live: Aloha to Lost" (12:05-1:05 a.m.)
From 12:05-1:05 a.m., ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live: Aloha to Lost" generated a big boost and broad exposure to the show, up by 3.22 million viewers (4.88 million vs. 1.66 million) and by 2.04 million in Adults 18-49 (2.73 million vs. 690,000) over its average this season.
* In fact it was "JKL's" 3rd-largest ever Adult 18-49 audience (any telecast), behind only its 2 post-"Super Bowl" airings.
A note about increasing DVR penetration and year-to-year rating comparisons: Year-to-year rating comparisons based on the Live + Same Day data stream are distorted by the level of DVR penetration in the Nielsen sample, which has jumped up to 36% currently, from 31% at the same point in 2009. More viewers are watching shows on their own timetables, which may not be reflected in the overnight next-day numbers. The only truly valid year-to-year comparison would be one based on the Live + 7 Day metric, once those stats are released by Nielsen.

Tonight “Jimmy Kimmel Live: Aloha to LOST” celebrated the end of the iconic series through discussion with in-studio LOST talent, celebrity farewell messages and three alternate ending scenes from the minds of creators Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse.
The entire studio set was recreated as a beach scene, complete with authentic “LOST” props and set pieces from the original Hawaiian location to welcome Naveen Andrews, Nestor Carbonell, Alan Dale, Jeremy Davies, Emilie de Ravin, Michael Emerson, Matthew Fox, Daniel Dae Kim, Terry O’Quinn and Harold Perrineau to the show, with special appearances by Jorge Garcia, Josh Holloway and Evangeline Lilly.

The End
We’ve re-watched the Pilot episode, and the recap show, and we can’t put off the inevitable any longer. It’s a unique feeling to anticipate and dread the same event with such equality, but the time is upon us. We wanted all of our new episodes in a row, and they gave it to us. We wanted an end to horrible happenings like Nikki and Paulo, and they gave it to us. We wanted answers, and in the past season, they gave that to us as well. Now, as the curtain falls on what I can only assume (if you’re reading this), is a form of TV religion to you, we want closure. Would we get it?
114 episodes down, and one more to go. I’m sad to say these words…it’s time for “The End”
(For those of you that are unfamiliar with my recaps, please mouse over the pictures for captions underneath, and enjoy this picture of me in all of my Lost Geek-dom right before the Finale started tonight)

Unless you've had your brain removed recently you will know that Tonight marks the last ever episode of our show LOST.
It's a bittersweet feeling knowing that the show we all love is finally coming to an end after all these years and I know I'll miss it greatly. The show and this site have become such a large part of my recent life that I cannot remember a time before Lost (probably due to the amount of beer I drink).
I was going to write a huge great post that probably no one would have read anyway, but I think had I done so, I'd of started to well up and get a little teary eyed, so instead I'll keep it short and sweet.
As we head into tonights episode I hope you all enjoy it as much as I know I will and that you'll come back after to share your thoughts and comments on the Episode and Vote in our various polls.
One of the best things to come out of Lost for me personally is that of the LOST fan community that has built up over the years as well as all the wonderful people I've had the pleasure to meet and work with online. So many people that I don't want to thank them all because if I miss one person out I don't want them to be offended. All the helpers and contributors for DarkUFO, SpoilerTV and the Forum all know who they are and without their help this site would not be what it is today. Also, I must not forget to thank every one of you who visit the site, vote on the polls, comment on the posts, ReTweet our content etc. It's all helped build DarkUFO into one of the largest ever Fan sites ever on the Internet (the site has been loaded over 160+ Million Times since we started).
However, as the title of this post suggests, we're not going anywhere fast here at DarkUFO (See Below) and we'll be around for as long as people keep visiting the site.
Feel free in the comments to just say hi, thanks, and/or share your thoughts on the show as it' heads into the final episode and what you'll miss the most about it. It's been a helluva ride.
So thank you everyone, enjoy tonight, and make sure you come back here after the episode and for many months/years to come.
Namaste.

Update: 23rd May Over the last 24hrs I've had so many emails for various people involved in the show and so many emails from fans asking not to post the spoilers for finale as well as about 100 very nasty hate emails that I've decided it's just not worth posting these spoilers this close to the Final ever episode. Sorry to those who were looking forward to the spoilers, but it's just not worth the grief I've been getting. You should still be careful in case they are released elsewhere on the net.
Enjoy the finale, Spoiler Free tonight.
We've had a number of major spoilers which we have delayed posting till as late as possible to avoid people getting spoiled who don't want to be for the finale. These will probably be posted sometime tomorrow, so this is an advanced heads up to those who don't want to be spoiled to get off the spoiler section.
Also, if you are a LOST site owner, Forum Admin, I suggest that you go into a Lockdown mode.
Also, if you visit non-moderated forums, I suggest you steer clear of these till after the finale to avoid being shotgun spoiled. Be careful where you visit.
I strongly suggest that when these are posted that you DO NOT View them unless you are a hard core Spoiler Addict.

What They Died For
With a title as presumptuous as "What They Died For", I was worried that this episode would disappoint fans if it was lacking in answers.
Luckily, the episode seemed to put most of the pieces in place for the series finale, while making us feel a little more comfortable, if not clear, about the whole Jacob succession thing. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and judging from the polls, so did many of you.
So, is everyone ready for the end? I know I'm not. It feels like only yesterday when I emailed Dark on a whim and asked to write recaps. Now, after Sunday, I'll be writing my last one. And even harder to believe, there will be no new Lost, ever! DarkUFO is certain to become the biggest support group on the Internet.

A while ago at the start of Season 6 we broke the news that Illana was actually Jacob daughter. However this spoiler never came out in the episode and we suspected it was due to that particular scene being cut. Today the actress, Zuleikha Robinson, confirms that she was initially intended to be Jacob's daughter but this plotline was dropped.
Thanks to FutureMan for the heads up.
A bit of breaking "Lost" news (well, as breaking as news can be about a character who died four episodes ago): Ilana Verdansky was Jacob's daughter.
That's what Zuleikha Robinson, the actress who played the vest-wearing Ajira Airlines flight survivor, revealed at the Wednesday opening of a "Lost" gallery exhibit at the Vilcek Foundation in New York. She was chatting with me and another journalist when we asked if she could tell us anything more about her character's relevance to the broader narrative on the show.
"I was supposed to be Jacob's daughter," she confirmed, adding that the writers ultimately decided they didn't have enough time to fully address that part of the "Lost" saga in the number of episodes they had left. Which is why Ilana got the "Boom goes the dynamite!" treatment in "Everybody Loves Hugo," accidentally blowing herself to smithereens after mishandling some explosive sticks.

Thanks to DarkUFO reader JohnConstant69 for the write-up of last nights events.
For those that like spoilers, we have posted a spoiler summary and extended sneak peek here.
It kicked so much massive ass!
It was like a 90 min class on screenwriting. I would highly recommend it to anyone who’s teaching scriptwriting to a high-school level class, as long as the student can get into LOST.
Jorge Garcia and Michael Emerson made a surprise appearance, which was actually touching.
Damon really played the funny man and Carlton the straight guy.
The interviewer was very intelligent and asked some great questions.
They showed classic clips to which Darlton commented on:
Jack and Locke arguing over “faith vs. science” and Locke asking Jack to push the button inside the Swan Hatch. They pointed out that it wasn’t so much that Locke didn’t have faith, he said he didn’t want to do it alone, and needed Jack, referencing the famous “live together, die alone” speech. They mentioned that the scene in the submarine is where they came full circle on Jack’s transformation because he was now the man of faith trying to get Sawyer to NOT do something, (fiddle with the bomb) and Sawyer was playing the role of the empiricist this time.
Desmond finally reaching Penny on the phone in the Constant, Sayid in the background. Talked about how ridiculous it was that his mind time traveled to 1997 to ensure Penny would call him in 2004, Faraday’s rat maze, etc. And how it was the hardest and longest episode for them to break. They wanted to reveal time travel in a personal way that involved endearing characters and lots of emotion. That’s why Desmond remarks to Faraday’s mathematical explanation of a Constant: “can it be a person?”
The Dharma scene where Hurley debates time travel rules with Miles, and finally stumps him. They anticipated the audience having the same sort of questions that Hurley did, and the scene pretty much already took place within the writer’s room.
Some *really* good questions from the audience: “why must there be a human presence on the island?” which they said they’ve never been asked before but couldn’t answer. One guy asked a question which seemed to startle Darlton, especially Damon, and they basically said “We don’t want to spoil the ending to the show” as their answer, which made me think the guy was *extremely* close in his guessing the global reveal. I’ll give you a hint: he asked if there was an allusion in people doubting the button-pushing in the hatch as a critical necessity, and the critical necessity of protecting the lightcave. There was a lot more to it, but that’s all I’m giving. Sorry.
“I know this is very brief, but honestly the entire thing flew by in a little over 90+ mins, and I’m still soaking it all in. A couple other memorable details to try to do it justice:
A lady from the audience said the show pretty much restored her faith in God and got her much closer in faith and relationships (wow)
Damon and Carlton spoke a LOT on the struggle of faith, reason, religion, empiricism, etc. Damon summarized the show in this way “you have the Bible, it tells you, you do this and this, or there are consequences” and at the end of the day, you have to choose to have faith in that book, or not. So it really isn’t about that book, it’s about whether or not you decide to trust it. That’s our show. And it’s not just the Bible, it’s basically all the religious texts”.
One guy asked Damon and Carlton for a job, Michael Emerson kindly got up and received his resume
A really good question asked from the audience: “if MIB knew he couldn’t kill a candidate, why was he trying to do so by dragging Locke underground in season 1?” to which Damon replied: “ahh yes, but was he trying to kill him? You have to remember that Locke had just seen “the face of the island, and it was beautiful” and he was planning on going and giving a big speech to the castaways to give them hope and courage. MIB didn’t like this and was preventing him from doing so.”
Damon used the analogy of the “Johnny Explainer” (aka Exposition-Guy) character that is normally used as a cheap plot device to cover complex backstory and narrative (Dharma guy comes wandering out of the jungle to tell the 815ers about his time in the Dharma Initiative), as a springboard to say “as writers, we divided up Johnny Explainer’s dialogue amongst our characters. We’d put his word in Ben’s mouth, in John Locke’s mouth, Jacob’s mouth, and you always had to wonder if they were telling the truth, or not. Every time someone in the show gave an explanation, we wanted there to be an element of doubt.” After all this Damon said something to the effect of “but Johnny Explainer is no longer giving you the fruit from the tree”. He used a lot of interesting metaphors, some I understood, some I didn’t.
How much was planned out? They had the end-game in mind during season 1. They know how they wanted it to end. Between the hiatus of season 1-2, they sat down and had time to write out the core mythology. But also, when each season started up in the writing bootcamp, they might change or modify or add things, knowing ultimately where they still had to go. The end-game has never changed in theme or purpose, but may have changed in small details and content.
Damon pointed out that the #1 and #2 questions most asked by fans is: 1) Was everything planned out? 2) how much input does the audience have on the show? Damon said you can’t have it both ways. Because if they planned EVERYTHING out and locked it away in some “LOST binder”, then obviously fans would not be allowed any input or effect on the show. An immediate response to the audience: people kept asking why Hurley wasn’t losing any weight… so they wrote in that he was stashing Dharma ranch dressing (and other things). An anticipated audience reaction dealt with pre-emptively: Nicki and Paulo.
Why Nicki and Paulo? Because in the third season they realized they were punting along and had to do something. Their rule was to introduce new characters at the beginning of each season, and as they saw they were introducing the Others characters at the cages (Juliet, etc.) they wanted to introduce new characters back at the beach camp. Thus, Nicki and Paulo. They admit it was a mistake and tried to be cruel in how they got rid of Nicki and Paulo to make the fans feel somewhat satisfied.
When Damon realized Walt was getting too tall (taller than Damon isn’t very tall, btw), they basically said “lets get Walt on that raft, pronto!” and remarked how you can notice during season 1’s arc that Walt’s voice cracks a bit ala Peter Brady on the Brady Bunch. They way they wrote this into the show was that Walt was so special that even he was freaking out the Others, and Ben wanted him off the island.
Personally, I’ve been getting a little disappointed and frustrated with the increasing criticisms and attacks on the show you can find on many popular blogs and news sites. I can tell you, honestly, that A LOT of things that Damon and Carlton explained about the writing process, about character motivations, about overarching themes they’ve built into the show, about mistakes they’ve made, etc. cleared up a TON of the negative things “fans” have been saying. I wish all those people were forced to attend and listen. It really would have put a lot of their skepticism, frustration, and doubt at ease.
Damon said “if you hated Expose, if you hated Across the Sea, please watch the finale, give it some time, and let’s see if you still hate those eps or think they were unnecessary in the grand scheme”. (Obviously he was talking more about Across the Sea than Expose)
Jorge listed Ben as his favorite character, Emerson listed Eko as his favorite character (they weren’t allowed to pick their own), and Damon and Carlton copped out not listing any-one character, but saying how if you ate your favorite food every single day, you’d be sick of it. But they were excited because they could write for different characters all the time and it never seemed to get stale for them. They said that Hurley was basically the personality of the writing team of Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, and they would not have been able to write Hurley that way as a character. They said that the Desmond character/story was pretty much their writing territory.
After an audience member asked Darlton and Jorge if they were going to continue podcasting (Darlton: no, Jorge, maybe 1-2 after the finale), and Damon explained that they wouldn’t have too much more to talk about after the finale, Damon turned to Jorge and asked him “after reading the finale, being in the finale, do you have anything that needs explaining?” and Jorge sat for awhile, thought, shifted in his seat, and said “naw man, I don’t… cuz… I get it… I think I get it!” and smiled and everyone laughed.
They listed a good rule for Widmore (and others). “If a character tells you something, you can doubt it. Like Widmore. He suddenly has this change of heart and says Jacob visited him? Did Jacob really visit him? On the other hand, if you SEE something happening, then it’s true and real. We witnessed Jacob visiting Ilana at the hospital, her all bandaged up. But all we know is Widmore relayed a story. So it might be false. You have to remember to not listen to what characters on LOST say, but what they actually DO. Keep this in mind when wondering if what Widmore said was true.” It seemed like a good rule for all the characters on LOST, btw.
I really, really hope this ends up on the DVD set, because I can tell you, I’ve read the interviews, the magazines, watched the recap eps, listened to the podcasts, and I still feel like I really got to know Damon and Carlton a heck of a lot more after this than all those others. It was definitely worth the price of admission.
I’m not even gonna say “overall, it was great”. Because I was smiling and enjoying every minute of it. Since this is starting to sound like an AICN type review, I’ll leave it here.
Namaste!
