Season 6
Well another Season of LOST is nearing and once again we were promised a season with no interruptions, but it seems like we will be given a break early in the season because of the Winter Olympics.
I know most of you are not too happy to read this but I had a feeling this would happen.
Where did this info come from!? Straight from LOST writer Carlton Cuse who apparently visited Harvard this past week and here is a statement from the Art Blog at Harvard:
Mr. Cuse graciously explained that the show would begin again in January then stop for the Olympics and then start back again in February.
The Olympics start Feb 12th 2010 and end Feb 28th, so expect at least a TWO WEEK break. Problem is they pretty much have no choice because if they do not take a break the ratings for those couple of episodes could take a big hit.
Please do not get too upset yet, because we have no official confirmation from ABC and we will definitely check with our sources and let you know anything we hear.
Stay tuned.

Congratulations to Benjamin Linus! He is your 2009 Character Cup champion!
Ben beat Locke 52%-48% in our closest Cup Final match yet. Sawyer was the favorite to win in the brackets, so Ben's win does count as an upset. Ben was predicted to win in just 18.4% of all brackets. Locke wasn't too far behind. He was predicted to win in 18.1% of all brackets.
Congratulations also to Sean "Luhks" Luhks for winning this year's bracket competition. While he was only one percentage point off on the outcome of the Finals, he predicted every single match correctly! For coming in first place, he will be receiving a copy of the Season 5 DVD set. Way to go!
Three different winners in three years! Will one of these victors claim a second victory next year? Or will Sawyer or Jack finally eek out a win after all is said and done? Season 6 is only three months away. Will the final season of Lost shake up any of the character fan bases? We'll just have to wait and see.
There's only one more season of Lost and only one more Character Cup. Be sure to come back next year for the final battle!

UPDATE: This poll will remain open for 2 days.
Congratulations to Sawyer! Though he was the heavy favorite to win it all, he is taking home the bronze medal after holding off a resurgent Desmond.
Sawyer 51% - Desmond 49%
This is it, ladies and gentlemen! We have reached the Finals! Including the consolation match, there have been 191,854 votes cast in this years Character Cup tournament. Those votes have brought us to this moment right here.
Two men are still standing. In one corner we have John Locke- an original Lostie and a juggernaut fan favorite. For much of the series, he has been a driving force in revealing many of the show's mythological elements. In the other corner we have Ben Linus- the brilliant one-time leader of the Others and a likewise fan favorite. Ever since his debut in Season 2, Ben has proven time and again that he is a wily fox and can almost never be trusted.
In many ways, these men are polar opposites. While John Locke was healed of his paralysis by the Island, Ben Linus was given cancer. While Ben trusted almost solely in himself, Locke was a believer of fate and trusted the Island to show him its will. Locke tried to lead people in a mostly-honest and open way while Ben ruled almost as a dictator. Ben Linus was never one to lose sight of his goals but John Locke was often plagued with doubt and lost faith numerous times. In the end, John Locke turned up dead but Ben Linus is still alive.
There are, however, many similarities between these men. At one time or another, both men were called to be leader of the Others. John Locke and Ben Linus often made it difficult for people to trust them. Both of them have a tendency to lose control of their emotions. Both have taken the lives of other people. Both have been confronted by the Smoke Monster and lived. Ben and John both turned the Frozen Donkey Wheel and were exiled from the Island and both of them returned on Ajira Flight 316. In the end, it appears that both of them were being used as pawns this entire time by the Island's seemingly supernatural residents.
It is impossible to apply the term 'hero' or 'villain' to either of these men, for they both have their merits and their flaws. It is now your turn to crown one of these flawed but beloved characters your 2009 Character Cup champion.

Thanks to Erin from Popular Mechanics for sending this over.
A new poster promoting Lost's sixth and final season recently surfaced on the Internet—and in addition to a line up of the cast, both past and present, it contains some hieroglyphics to consider. PM sent the poster to Dr. James Allen, Wilbour Professor of Egyptology and Chair of Egyptology and Ancient Western Asian Studies at Brown University—the man who gave the first indication that the mysterious four-toed statue was not Anubis, as many had assumed, but Taweret, the half-hippo, half-croc Egyptian goddess who protected mothers and infants. Allen had this to say about the poster: "The hieroglyphs spell out two Egyptian words, meaning 'Who is the guide?' or 'Who is the leader?'" We'll leave the interpretation of that up to you.

Character Cup
Congratulations to Ben Linus! Our resident bug-eyed bunny killer is moving on to his very first Character Cup Finals!
Ben 55% - Sawyer 45%
Ben's victory marks the second statistical upset of the tournament! Sawyer was favored to win in 51.6% of all brackets and Ben was only predicted to win in 39.1% of all brackets. This also marks an even greater statistical upset, because Sawyer was the runaway favorite (according to the brackets) to win this year's Character Cup Final match! The door has been blown wide open and the Finals could very well be a crap-shoot.
But that will have to wait until Monday. Today we're focusing on the bronze medal match.
Both Sawyer and Desmond have suffered bitter losses this week and each of them is looking for a little victory. After spending years on the Island, Desmond managed to escape and find Penny, the love of his life. This love was threatened by Benjamin Linus but it was not taken away. After the Island disappeared, Sawyer found real love in the arms of Juliet. This love was threatened when the Ajira 316 folk appeared on the Island and it seems that this love was taken away in the Season 5 finale. Desmond & Penny and Sawyer & Juliet have become two of the best romances on the show to date.
Lovers they may be, but both Sawyer and Desmond have a fighter streak in them. Sawyer has done his fair share of butt-kicking throughout the course of the show while taking on the Others numerous times, as well as a team of mercenaries from the freighter. Desmond may not have as many punches recorded as Sawyer but he landed them when they counted. He relentlessly beat Ben Linus to a pulp when the man threatened his family.
So, both men are lovers and both men are fighters. The question is, which do you prefer?

Just found out that on the Blu-Ray Live Materials disk there will be the final Lost University segment which will run for 7m 16sec as well as having what they call 26 Excel Navigation Docs and 25 Page Breakdown PDF's.
I suspect these will be only available on the Blu-Ray editions but I'm sure that for those of us without Blu-Ray that these extra materials will be "obtained" so that we we can all view them when they are released.

Congratulations to John Locke! He has made his way back to the Finals with a solid win over Desmond Hume.
Locke 58% - Desmond 42%
Locke was predicted to win this semifinal matchup by an even 44% of our bracketeers. Desmond was predicted to win on just 18.3% of the brackets. This means that about a third of the folk in our bracket competition thought the semifinal would be won by one of the characters Locke and Desmond defeated along the way.
Luhks is still in the lead and still has a perfect bracket on his hands. Several competitors are still right behind him in the standings though. Today's semifinal bout has the potential to shakeup the standings quite a bit. Two heavyweight characters face off but only one will move on.
Our second semifinal pits two interesting men against each other. Both have led a life of lies, one as the shifty leader of the Island's inhabitants and the other as a successful con man. One came to the Island as a young boy while the other came there as a grown man. One started of his run on the show as a leader while the other positioned himself as an antihero. Both have had their share of remarkable feats while on the Island. Both have survived a few near-death experiences, though whether they both came out stronger on the other side is debatable.
The first time we saw their paths cross was when Ben Linus had his people abduct Sawyer and some of his fellow Losties. Ben tormented Sawyer by putting him in a cage, filling his mind with doubt and showing him the pointlessness in trying to escape Hydra Island. Sawyer eventually did escape and was given the opportunity to settle a score that had been haunting him for most of his life. Ben allowed several Losties to use the helicopter to leave the Island after they helped save his life. When that helicopter was running out of fuel on the way to the freighter, Sawyer jumped off to help his friends and swam back to shore. Then the Island disappeared.
The second time their paths crossed was actually in Ben's past. Sawyer, now trapped on the Island in the 1970s, managed to convince the DHARMA Initiative to allow him and his friends to stay and become part of the group. When a handful of Ajira 316 passengers appeared back in time, Sawyer found himself trying to save Ben's life, despite knowing the monster that he would eventually become. At the end of Season 5, Sawyer's fate was left unknown, while Ben had returned to the Island in the present and was tricked into killing Jacob by a mysterious new character.
Both men have blood on their hands but have also done great things. The question is this- which one deserves a shot at the championship more?

Yesterday's battle between two lovers was a sad affair and it was also a pretty easy victory for Sawyer. He moves into the Semifinals of the 2009 Character Cup.
Sawyer 73% - Juliet 27%
Sawyer was the overwhelming favorite in the brackets. He was predicted to win in 88.7% of all brackets. Juliet was only predicted to win in an even 6% of all brackets. Speaking of the brackets, you guessed it! Sean "Luhks" Luhks is still leading our bracket competition with a perfect set of predictions. There are only three matches left that will determine our winner. Will Luhks be able to hang on or will he falter at the end? You have to love the excitement!
Now we move on to the Semifinals! Our first Final Four matchup pits the winners of the first two Character Cups against each other. Both are looking for a second taste of glory but only one will make it to the Finals, riding there on your votes. Both competitors have led very tortured lives. One led a life of utter significance and always pined for some kind of calling or purpose. The other spent much of his life in search of honor and respect. Both of them found their way to the Island, though under very different circumstances. Desmond Hume crashed there while sailing around the world. John Locke came years later as an original Lostie aboard Oceanic Flight 815 and was healed of his paralysis.
Both of these men had an unintentional impact on the others life. When Locke bat on the Hatch door following Boone's death, Desmond knew that he didn't cause the end of the world and had hope. When Desmond turned the light on in the Hatch, Locke saw it as a sign and had hope. When Desmond abandoned the Hatch computer, Locke took up the task. They were both present at the end of the Hatch's existence. As a result, Desmond gained the ability to see flashes of the future. Locke met the Others and eventually became their leader for a few moments. Desmond left the Island with the Oceanic 6 and swore never to return after being reunited with his long lost love. Locke left the Island after turning the Frozen Donkey Wheel and was tasked with bringing the Oceanic 6 back to the Island. To do so, he had to die and appears to still be dead after returning to the Island on Ajira 316.
The question is this- which of these awesome characters will you help get back to the Finals?

Ouch. That's all I have to say about yesterday's match. Ouch.
Ben 82% - Kate 18%
Ben was predicted to win in 87.9% of all brackets. Kate was predicted to win in just 3.4%. This leaves Sean "Luhks" Luhks still in first place in our bracket competition. Will he enter the Semifinals with a perfect bracket?
Our fourth and last Quarterfinal truly is a tragic affair. These two combatants started out as enemies but eventually became lovers. One is an original Lostie and has been with us since the beginning. The other debuted as an Other during Season 3 but defected to the Lostie cause along the way. When the Island disappeared, they were transported through time to the days of the DHARMA Initiative. Through difficulty and deceit these two made each other whole and fell in love. He helped a distressed fertility doctor find purpose and she helped melt a former con man's heart. The Season 5 finale saw one of these two supposedly give up their life so the other might live. Which of these star-cross'd lovers will you support?

And we're back in action! Last week, Lock had no problem defeating Sayid, earning his way into the Semifinals.
Locke 76% - Sayid 24%
Locke was predicted to win in 72.4% of all brackets while Sayid was predicted to win in 2.4% of all brackets. So Locke was pretty much guaranteed a win. Will today's battle be any closer?
Sean "Luhks" Luhks still leads the bracket competition with a still-flawless set of predictions. How much longer can he hold out at the top?
Quarterfinal #3 finds two very important characters going head to head. One is an original Lostie and the other is the former leader of the Others. One was taken prisoner and tormented by the other only to later to be enabled to escape the Island with the help of her former captor. Both have gained custody of children that aren't theirs and have lost them along the way in one form or another. One is a mastermind genius capable of all things evil. The other is a cold-blooded killer who came to the Island as a prisoner. Both came back to the Island via Ajira 316, but in different time periods.

UPDATE: The Character Cup will resume on Monday.
While the percentages may be close, it was never much of a contest. Congratulations to Desmond! He picked up an early lead and never looked back.
Desmond 55% - Jack 45%
Support for each in the brackets was equally tight. Desmond was predicted to win this Quarterfinal match in 39.3% of all brackets. Jack was predicted to win in 33.3% of all brackets. This means that there has still only been one statistical upset all tournament and Sean "Luhks" Luhks is still on top with his perfect bracket intact.

Howdy folks! Can you believe that the first three rounds are over already? This means that we have arrived at the quarterfinals! But who are the last two character joining us? Why that would be Jack and Locke, of course!
Jack 61% - Daniel 39%
Locke 70% - Richard 30%
Jack was predicted to win in Round 3 on 72.7% of all brackets, with Daniel only picking up 25.8% support. Locke wasn't the overwhelming favorite we expected. Only 82.5% of bracketeers picked him to win. Still, compared to Richard's 16.4% prediction, Locke dominated.

What a day! We were finally treated to a close match again courtesy of Hurley and Desmond. Hurley started out with the lead but Des caught up and managed to hold him off by just over 200 votes. Sun didn't fair as well against Kate but it was a good day for voter turnout nonetheless.
Kate 62% - Sun 38%
Desmond 53% - Hurley 47%
In all, 62% of our bracketeers predicted a Desmond win in Round 3. Hurley garnered a respectable 35.6%. Kate was predicted to win in only 51.1% of all brackets, while Sun only earned 23% confidence.

Friday delivered two utter blow-outs. Here's the results:
Ben 86% - Smokey 14%
Sawyer 86% - Frank 14%
They both won by the same margin and their support in the brackets was pretty close too! Ben was predicted to win in 92.4% of the brackets with Smokey appearing on 5.2%. Sawyer was the overwhelming favorite with 96.2% of bracketeer support. Frank only managed to pick up 1.6%.
This means that we've still got two contestants with a prefect bracket and the rest of us are still having fun with the game. Will today be the great equalizer?

Sayid and Juliet emerge triumphant! It looks like we might finally be getting down to some closer matchups. Here's how it all worked out:
Sayid 57% - Charlie 43%
Juliet 65% - Eko 35%
Here's a funny little fact for you- Neither Charlie nor Sayid were among the top 8 characters predicted to win in Round 3! Charlie came in at #9 with 34.2% of the brackets supporting him. Jacob (who was defeated by Charlie) was #10 with 30.5% of all brackets supporting him. Sayid was #11, with an even 30% of bracketeers favoring him. So, not only is Sayid's victory over Charlie a statistical upset because Charlie had more brackets supporting him, but it's also an upset to the whole system! Crazy times indeed.
Juliet vs. Eko was a different story. Juliet was predicted to win in 74.9% of the brackets. Eko picked up only 14.7% support.
So now we are down to just two perfect brackets! Congratulations to Sean "Luhks" Luhks and VV "VVMini" Mini for making it this far with their picks. The question remains- will either of them be able to keep their streak going? Today's matchups aren't likely to cause any extra drama for these lucky two but maybe the rest of Round 3 will.
Our first battle pits a brilliant but dangerous man against an intelligent and dangerous being. They've interacted before on the show. One was summoned by the other in Season 4 while the summoner was spared by the summoned in Season 5. Will you vote for the man of many lies or the column of smoke capable of learning your lies.
The second duel pits an original Lostie against a member of the Freighter Four. Our Lostie friend has yet to leave the Island while the Freighter man has now come to the Island twice. One was seen alive at the end of Season 5 while the others fate has been left up in the air. Will you vote for the reformed con man or the reformed alcoholic?

A few weeks ago we ran our first Twitter Competition Giveaway. It's been a great success and thanks to the hundreds and hundreds of you that took part.
We picked one lucky person at random out of all the tweets and that person is MKinNJ (http://twitter.com/MKinNJ)
Here is a picture of the winning tweet.
MKinNJ: I've sent you a Direct Message on twitter. Please contact me to so I can arrange delivery of your prize.
Thanks again to everyone who took part and we hope to run another of these very soon, so stay tuned and watch for the announcement on twitter.

Congrats to Mr. Eko and Richard Alpert! Their victories yesterday closed out Round 2. Miles was leading at the start of the day but Eko inched ahead slowly but surely and edged him out. Richard didn't have much competition at all from Claire in a moderate blowout. Here's the results:
Eko 56% - Miles 44%
Richard 79% - Claire 21%
Eko was predicted to win in 58.2% of all brackets, while Miles only picked up 36.6%. Richard was an overwhelming favorite, predicted to win in 93.9% of all brackets, leaving Claire with a paltry support base of just 5.7%. So, we still have yet to see a statistical upset!
But now it's Round 3. This means tougher matchups and new pictures! That's right, I've gone through and given our Sweet 16 contestants a face lift. There's just 6 bracketeers left with a perfect bracket and today is going to cut that number down for sure!
First up is a battle of two original Losties. One has since passed on and the other was last seen quite close to death. One is a former addict and the other is a former member of the Iraqi Republican Guard. Will you support the bloody rock god or the tough-as-snails soldier?
Our second match is between a Tailie and an Other-turned-Lostie. One is dead and the other is most likely dead but nothing is certain until Season 6 rolls around. One came to the Island by plane; the other by submarine. Will you vote for the warlord-turned priest or the blonde bombshell?
Match #1: Charlie vs. Sayid

Match #2: Eko vs. Juliet
