    Things I Noticed - "Jughead" by Vozzek69

Just like with any other show, LOST has good episodes and bad ones. We've seen teaser episodes, filler episodes, wild boar-hunts, and of course the legendary Nikki/Paolo fiasco. After eighty-something viewing hours, I think we all know what makes a great episode: fast-paced, character-driven, dirty deep jungle action. This is Jughead, and I for one couldn't care less what the off-islanders are doing. Things I Noticed:

Finally, a Reason for Charlie to be in Diapers
Our opening scene appears at first to be a flash-forward, but in fact it takes place three years ago. As if Desmond and Penny's story weren't touching enough, they go one step further and name their kid after Charlie. Born in the Philippines, Charlie II brings uncharacteristic hope and happiness to LOST. While the rest of the characters are having a pretty dismal time, Desmond's life is going along good. Maybe this is because he avoids the real world, his boat functioning as an island all its own. Or maybe its because Desmond isn't one of the people who were not 'supposed' to leave the island, marking him with immunity from the weird crap Jack, Hurley, Kate and everyone else has gone through.

Flash-forward to a three-year old Charlie, and Desmond is about to hit the mainland for perhaps the first time since he left the O6. His dream/memory from last episode was a few weeks ago at best, because we know he wouldn't have waited very long to sail to Oxford. Deep down we know that guilt will eventually bring Desmond back to the island, and Penny knows this all too well. By the time the episode's over, Widmore knows also. He and Ben both share a sneaky way of guiding people along while allowing them to think they're still making their own choices.

Thanks to b3rt4 for the heads up.

The good news for LOST is that the people who watched the premiere stuck around. It averaged 11.067 million. FOX’s new Lie to Me averaged 12.113 million, but LOST had the better 18-49 demo - 4.8/11 for LOST vs. 4.4/10 for Lie to Me. Lie to Me has a little bit of Idol overrun which will be stripped out in the finals and lower its number some.

and here is ABC's take on the ratings.

    "Lost" (9:00-10:00 p.m.)
Demonstrating its appointment-television status, "Lost" surged from its lead-in by 5.8 million viewers and by 182% in young adults to win the 9 o'clock hour in Adults 18-49 and stand as Wednesday's No. 1 scripted TV show for the 2nd week in a row. Winning the 9 o'clock hour, "Lost" overcame Fox's "Idol"-boosted episode of "Lie to Me" by 9% in Adults 18-49 (4.8/11 vs. 4.4/10).

    * For the 2nd week in a row, "Lost" qualified as Wednesday's No. 1 scripted TV program in Adults 18-49, Adults 25-54 and across each of the key Men demographics (M18-34/M18-49/M25-54). Moving ahead of Fox's "Lie to Me" on their second match-up, "Lost" also emerged as the night's highest-rated scripted series in Adults 18-34.

    * "Lost" retained nearly all of its week-ago season premiere delivery in Total Viewers (97% - 11.1 million vs. 11.4 million) and Adults 18-49 (96% - 4.8/11 vs. 5.0/12). The show was up from its season opener in key Men, posting the series' highest-rated telecast since early-March 2008 in Men 18-34 (4.4/12 vs. 4.2/12) and Men 18-49 (4.6/12 vs. 4.5/12) - since 3/6/08.

Lost's Nuclear Bomb Tech Decoded: Season 5, "Jughead"

Thanks to my good friends over a Popular Mechanics here is a nice little article about last nights episode.

Last night's episode of Lost, "Jughead," had its fair share of "Holy cow, what did he just say!?" moments. Like when we learned that uber-rich (and uber-mysterious) businessman Charles Widmore was funding physicist Daniel Faraday's time travel research. Or that Widmore himself was once a Latin-speaking Other on the very island he's spent the last 20 years trying to find. And then there's that little fact that, oh my, there's a nuclear bomb on the island!

It's that newest introduction of the island's itinerary of strange objects that we're looking at today (we can only hope an explanation for that four-toed statue is still to come). While being held captive with Charlotte and Miles, Faraday decides the key to their survival is to let the Others continue to assume that their motley, multi-ethnic crew is a part of the American military—but they're not just standard troops, they're scientists, sent there to recover their hydrogen bomb. We asked nuclear bomb expert Ivan Oelrich, vice president for the strategic security program at the Federation of American Scientists, to give us a primer on the workings of hydrogen bombs and to weigh in on whether last night's plot was as realistic as Widmore sinking a plane in waters too deep for recovery or if it’s as unlikely as Hurley throwing out a jug of Dharma ranch dressing.

Since the first season, honesty has always been a scarce commodity for Lost characters. For every instance of a character’s confession, it seemed that a few more buried secrets took its place. For every example of sincere cooperation, you could guarantee that a handful of cons, deceptions, and betrayals would soon follow. Things started on a small scale in the first two seasons, with petty crimes and infidelities scattered throughout the flashbacks and island interactions. Benjamin Linus, Juliet Burke, and the rest of the Others escalated the level of deceit as things moved into Season Three, and made the crash survivors look like amateurs by comparison. Season Four then introduced two massive global conspiracies into story: first, the staged flight 815 wreckage at the bottom of the ocean; and then the Oceanic Six cover story (a lie to conceal the other lie). Misdirection has become a way of life both for the characters and the Lost writers, who manipulate perceptions of truth with more skill than Anthony Cooper himself.

The second episode of Season Five, with its decidedly straightforward title The Lie, offers perhaps the series’ most thorough examination of this recurring motif. The episode begins by sending the story back to the formative stages of the Oceanic Six Lie. Kate, Sun, Sayid, Hurley, and Jack all respond in subtly different ways to the situation, and each one participates in the scheme for deeply personal reasons. The conversation arrives at a unanimous conclusion: they need to lie, because it’s the only way to protect those left behind from Charles Widmore. In those immortal words once spoken by Dr. Shephard (perhaps the only good thing ever to arise from Stranger in a Strange Land): “That’s what they say. That’s not what they mean.” As Hurley points out straight away, the logic behind their Lie never even made much sense; Widmore would seem to be just as likely to find the island no matter what story they told. The reasons stated on the surface serve as a mere pretext to disguise their true motivations underneath. These five co-conspirators are even incapable of being honest with each other about their collective dishonesty.

Thanks to Rosalind for the heads up.

The fifth season of the hit series ‘Lost’ premiered on U.S. television with two brand new episodes last week. With close to two million downloads for both episodes in only a few days, it leads this week’s list of most pirated TV-Shows on BitTorrent.

Every week we take a look at the most downloaded TV-Shows on BitTorrent. Lost is traditionally one of the most downloaded TV shows. Last year, it got the honor of being the most pirated show of 2008, and we expect the show to end up high in the 2009 list as well.

The fifth season of Lost just started with two new episodes. Both episodes were downloaded close to two million time in the first week. As always, the vast majority of the people who download the show are located outside the U.S, where it may take up to a year before season 5 will actually air on TV.

The rise of unauthorized downloading of TV-shows is a signal that customers want something that is not available through other channels. It’s more about availability than the fact that it’s free and should be viewed as an opportunity, not a threat. The more restrictions, the more piracy - it’s as simple as that.

The Lie - Recap and Analysis by Erika

With just over 24 hours to go before the third episode of the season airs, I've finally finished the rest of my premiere recap. This post only covers the second hour, entitled "The Lie." Since the Island events were relatively straightforward this time around, I'll begin with those...

    I KEEP BLEEDING
    I KEEP, KEEP BLEEDING LOVE

The time-trippers actually stayed put (year-wise) this episode. Charlotte had another nosebleed and complained of a headache and memory loss, which concerned Daniel as he seems to understand what those symptoms mean... most likely because of his space-time research and his role in helping Desmond avoid death by encouraging him to find his constant (Penny) not too long ago.

So what exactly is going on with Charlotte? At the end of Season Four, Miles commented that he knew she accepted the freighter mission in order to find the place she'd been born. Between that remark, the joy Charlotte exuded when we first saw her land on the Island, and the fact that she's had nosebleeds not only as a child but also now after the Island moved, I don't think there's any reason to question the theory that she has been on the Island at some other point in her life.
